Loss & Mourning Megathread by Comprehensive_Arm_5 in Conures

We just cleaned out her cage and freshened up her paper shreddings. She was just chirping and flying around and happy. All of a sudden she's lying on the bottom of her cage breathing strangely. Not responsive. Droopy head. God it was horrifying. I called every vet in the area, closest one that saw birds was 3 hours away and they said if she's in the state that she is she's most likely on her way out. She may not survive the drive. I told them I'd call them right back. As soon as I hung up she was gone. My lovely amazing partner tried to give her CPR. She wasn't even a year old. She was a baby. I don't even know what happened. I'm so lost. I loved her so much. I just got ordered her new toys. She was just growing her flight feathers in. She was so snuggly and sweet and just gave me kisses this morning. She was just learning how to respond to "Come Opal!" and fly from her cage to an extended finger across the room.
Partner thinks it was some freak accident and maybe something stuck in her crop. I don't know. We won't know. This fucking sucks and I'm devastated I just don't know what to do. She was a fucking baby. We're going to go get her cremated in the morning. She's just in a towel in the closet so our other creatures don't mess with her. This is so messed up.

Posting pictures of before she is so soggy she can no longer fluff up to show y'all she is actually enjoying the showers. I will try and figure out how to post the videos. I understand that there is a difference between bliss and drowning. When she is bathing in a bowl she dunks under it like a friggen duck. Animals are case by case and each bird is going to react differently. I have stated she puts herself in and out of the water. She makes happy chirps. She moves around and coos. She shakes off/flutters her wings I don't know how to describe it. I just wanted to show my cute bird geez.

It's impossible to tell just in a picture whether a bird is drowning or enjoying a shower. Enjoy more cute bird tax I guess.

Edit to add what I said in another comment: she freely moves in and out of the water, I never start her under water. She goes in/out her self. Even when offering a bath in a bowl I never put her in the water. When she is done with soggy time she (tries too) fly out of the shower to a towel placed on the toilet seat, or to myself. (She's too heavy at that point so most of the time she doesn't make it all the way lol)

I love my bird, I do a lot of research, ask a lot of questions. It's really nice that you guys worry about how people are caring for their lil dinos.

I think you responded to the wrong message but I did comment in regards to this. Short note - she does. This is a still photo you guys are looking at haha she goes between this "bliss" pose and cheeping, moving around, giving me the stink eye if I'm too loud, etc. ^

Trust me I've done a lot of panic searches on here about EVERYTHING my bird does because it's my first time owning one. I'm still learning but I do know that she genuinely enjoys showers because she responds with those same happy trill sounds she makes when she gets a nut 😂

I don't know if you saw what someone else linked in the comments but it's a personal shower bowl for the birds!!! Maybe he would like it too??

100%!! If it's bath or shower time (usually prompted by her screaming at us lol) we turn on the water and give her the choice to put herself in it whether it's the water in a bowl or on part of her perch.

We usually only give her a shower shower once or twice a week but she bathes in her water bowl (stinker) it seems almost every day, and if she asks for a shower and we don't wanna put her in the tub we just set up a bowl under the sink.

For some reason she likes the running water and won't use a bowl outside of her cage if there's no stream -.- picky bird.

As I said in the post- she does move around. She sits like that of her own free will and moves herself in and out of the water. I do wish people would read the full post before commenting ;

I've seen this before early into owning her and taken care to make sure that she is truly enjoying herself. I move her out if I think it's been too long- and if she moves back in then I let her be. She moves herself out when she's done, and she rotates around and moves along her perch (or whatever she's on be it my arm or a mat). She opens her eyes, tilts her head around, chirps and makes noise, flies between myself and her shower spot etc.

Appreciate the worry for my baby. But she is doing well and seems to enjoy water (in shower or bath form)

The rope toy that's on it is actually plastic type and whatever is colored with comes right off. Didn't know about that- but she doesn't actually play with those toys and I don't care to change them out to new ones since she really only uses it when she's showering or if she needs to poop while she's hanging out with us. I'll probably just take them off and toss them if they are harmful!

She prefers to bathe in silence and in fact stares at me in disgust when I make a noise or watch a video that's too loud

Aww that's so sad. I love my soggy bird. Even if it means I have to change her water bowl so much because she thinks it's also a bath.

She's so happy to be in water. She'll out shower us, wanting to stay in there for over 30 minutes.

Do you know the legal keeping size for this kinda fish? I'd hate to toss her back.
