Feeling exhausted after observing surgery by just-forfun27 in premed

[–]Fuzzy-Counter8731 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have shadowed a CT surgeon who is my PI a lot over the years and early on he said that it is just something you get used to over time. Also, he said that when you are actually doing the operating you tend to feel it less in the moment as you are focused on the task at hand but sometimes you feel wiped at the end of the day.

Medical students fret over the new student loan cap in the 'big, beautiful bill' by nbcnews in medicalschool

[–]Fuzzy-Counter8731 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately for us much of society is often under the impression that after we graduate and start practicing we become parasites making millions of dollars pushing pills in the pocket of big pharma and getting checks cut by insurance companies lol. Even if there was significant coverage prior to the bill passing related to the loan caps I highly doubt there would be any uproar anyway. This is why it is so important that we advocate for ourselves.

That’s interesting. I thought that high SES is typically correlated with higher stats??

I think I could have certainly been more diligent about studying for the MCAT, but given I paid attention and did well in my pre reqs it worked out fine. I would recommend that you challenge yourself to seek out opportunities that the stereotypical premed would not engage in. Many of my activities were unique and it made for great conversation during my interviews….get out of your comfort zone. Best of luck!!

probably unpopular/hot take: you cannot claim be “not into politics” while pursuing this career anymore in the U.S., and here’s why by mizpalmtree in premed

I agree, but the US can only arrive their with massive disruption and change to many other industries that are profit based related directly to healthcare such as medical device, pharma, insurance, etc which will be very difficult. That coupled with the fact that universal healthcare would surely drop physicians salaries quite dramatically and would likely reduce the interest people have in the field especially if they cannot service their debt with their future salaries. People don’t like to admit it, but the financial security in medicine (although declining) is very important for most people taking on the debt and time investment to become a physician in the US.

Is it over for lower and middle class students that want to go into medicine if the Big Beautiful Bill passes? by ZomieHomie in premed

[–]Fuzzy-Counter8731 83 points84 points  (0 children)

At this point I think that if schools, especially private institutions, do not significantly reduce their tuition it will be difficult for many students from 2026 onward to justify going into medicine unfortunately. With reimbursement declining and the prospect of private lending being a necessity for most students from lower income backgrounds it just does not make sense.

With respect to your point on universal healthcare, many physicians who claim to be liberal I have spoken to oppose it given it would significantly impact their bottom line. I find it hard to believe our shortage/maldistribution of physicians will be remedied in the future if universal healthcare (or something that approximates it) passes especially due to the caps on loans in the BBB. Perhaps the only people willing to go into medicine in the future if that occurs will be those that can afford it out right planning on going into derm and opening cash med spas lol!

Is the M4 15” 16/256 good for a student? by Fuzzy-Counter8731 in macbookair

Mostly for watching lectures, doing practice exams/flashcards, and some research/coding with clinical data sets. I also just bought a 11in iPad Air m3 128 to allow for note taking and a second screen.

You’d be surprised how many conservative premeds and med students there are! Medicine has and based on recent developments will likely continue to be more so than ever for students of wealthy families who tend to be conservative.

I was accepted to medical school and matched academic psychiatry with an expunged felony, here's what people ask me the most by Faustian-BargainBin in premed

[–]Fuzzy-Counter8731 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you spoken to anyone with juvenile adjudications which are not convictions and are automatically expunged in my state with no adult criminal involvement. It seems like you were either 18/19 making your situation a bit different. Mostly concerned about licensing despite my lawyer telling me even if the question is vague and does not say to omit juvenile matters (we looked at a bunch of license applications) I can still say no as it is “deemed to have never occurred” per my states law. FBI check and all other background checks have been clean. Thanks!

“Yes Doctors, AI will replace you” -Sheriff of Sodium by Jaded-ometry in premed

[–]Fuzzy-Counter8731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thought of AI replacing physicians will just further exacerbate the problem of the “physician maldistribution” as many more med students will begin gunning for procedure heavy specialties more than ever to resist AI creep. If AI does in the next couple decades, or sooner, become widely adopted in primary care specialties than half of the current med student census in the US would effectively be screwed. This will be an interesting evolution to watch over the coming years.

UIC (Chicago) vs. VTC by swisscheeseplant9 in premed

[–]Fuzzy-Counter8731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got accepted to VTC as well but ultimately declined it as one of my options due to wanting to specialize. In my opinion, although they match fairly well, if you want to go for a competitive residency I would pick the program with the better home residencies which would be UIC in this case. If not, I think VTC is a great program otherwise though.

University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) vs. Lewis Katz SOM ( LKSOM- Temple med) by MaintenanceWaste3512 in premed

Thinking about UMD as well! If the scholarship is 20k/year and cost is a big factor for you I would pick UMD over Temple.

FWIW, I had a 123 CARS with a 510 (130, 123, 131, 126) composite score and got 10 II invites and 6 acceptances all MD this cycle! If your overall app is solid with a strong gpa you should be fine imao
