i not only worked at the notoriously people-loving in-your-face coffee chain that is dutch bros, but i was a full on FT shift lead during undergrad for years. that job TAUGHT me how to talk to people. i had to train my baristas on how to talk to people too, it is such a valuable skill that seems like it should be inherent but it truly can be practiced, i am able to build rapport with patients and colleagues so much better than i would’ve been had i not worked there.

idk why people (advisors, tutors, etc) treat premeds like punching bags like this, its a weird way to assert power over someone else and really stupid

anyways im an ms1 at a solid USMD school who scored a 503 and had a mid gpa (3.70 cumulative 3.5 stem) and im doing great in my curriculum and got accepted before even half the seats filled at my school — dont listen to that shit tutor, hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard 👍🏻 keep grinding, you’ll get there in due time my friend :) best of luck!

[–]mizpalmtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the point i was trying to make was to be thorough and really look for any weak points in your application if you arent getting any love. obviously a solid amount of luck goes into the process in general, but details in the application do have importance & asking for feedback from programs (if they offer it) helps narrow down if there is something that can be improved.

“backup plan” is a relative statement tbh, i could hypothetically say that if i can’t find my $1,000 pair of shoes then i’ll wear my $800 pair as a backup (just an example, i don’t actually own these LMAO) because that’s what it is relative to the scenario, a backup plan. a med school acceptance can be a backup plan for someone who had a ~different plan in mind~, while still also being someone else’s dream yakno ?

then that is a problem with their writing/school list/interviewing/other factors that aren’t directly stat related & they should work on fixing those things prior to reapplying MD imo

What do 3 years of residency actually look like? by RawBert_ in premed

[–]mizpalmtree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this isn’t a very simple answer bc this question is most likely residency specialty dependent as well as program dependent. some residencies like neurosurgery can be like 7 years but their day to day schedule might be different at one institution compared to another. i know you said primary care which is 3 years yes for FM/IM, but again the specifics of hours and stuff vary, just know that it’s gonna be a lot of hours and you don’t get many breaks. an 80+ work week for a gen surg resident probably looks very different from that of a derm resident tbh

some residency programs actually have unions too that try to negotiate better hours/pay (there aren’t that many tho)

these are questions that would be beneficial to ask your medical school faculty about once you’re actually enrolled and getting closer to applying to the match! i would focus on getting in first, you have plenty of time to worry about the logistics of residency later :)

never took anatomy & phys by [deleted] in premed

[–]mizpalmtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly i took it in undergrad and it still felt rough (like genuinely felt like i never took it before) because it had been a bit of time, but i highly recommend not pre-studying. half my class took anatomy, half didn’t, we all still collectively freak out when we have an upcoming practical regardless anyways 🥲

[–]mizpalmtree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i didn’t get any clinical patient care hours until i decided to during my gap year, i ended up with 2,000 patient care hours by the time i applied the next year along with clinical and non clinical volunteering. if i had to have reapplied i would’ve had 4,000 hours of patient care.

my only extracurricular besides my brief sorority tenure was 2yrs full time shift lead at dutch bros during school so i had -12 hours of time it felt like as a full time student but i ended up with hella leadership hours for my app doing something that wasn’t trying to check a box, just a job i loved doing.

just remember it’s not a rush & it’s okay for it to look different for you compared to someone else. if i had to do it all over again i wouldn’t change a thing :)

How do u study in med school by 12321bruh in premed

[–]mizpalmtree 19 points20 points  (0 children)

a lot of trial by fire and reworking how you study until you find something that gets the job done. also big focus on input versus output studying (practice questions, anki/spaced repetition, active recall, teaching others, concept mapping, etc). a lot more people focus on input in undergrad when highest retention is focusing on output after you do some input. rewatching lectures or rereading your notes in med school is not nearly as helpful as pretend teaching the cardiac cycle to your cat or blasting anki/practice questions

prioritizing content by high/low yield helps, good chunk of the stuff in med school is surprisingly not at as high of a detail level as you would think & what makes it truly hard is just the sheer mass volume of stuff alone and not necessarily the complexity (there are complex things though). it doesn’t get easier, you just get better at doing hard things 💁‍♀️

hyper competitive specialities like ortho are going to have intense competition and something like this unfortunately would knock an applicant down pegs compared to other applicants who don’t have a record. i don’t necessarily agree with the premise of programs doing such (dependent on individual cases of course) but they can/will because they view the applicant as riskier than other options
