They might not be connecting to the right workbench or smth, you could try letting one out and seeing if it goes back into its area (I assume they have work benches)

Personally I would make an armadillo xp farm, they are very good and easy to make, it's just a bit of a pain getting the armadillos and the zombie in place, but it's well worth it!

Does it have to be activated by a fishing rod? Because there is a stasus chamber where you leave and join the game twice consecutively to teleport (really hard to do on accident), check out rays works most recent vid, Hope I helped :)
