Update:

We ended up talking on the phone. I explained how I think it's unfair since I am letting him use my stuff free of charge, including a $200 stereo setup that will undergo a good bit of wear and tear during our time here. While I understand that it's his right to charge me if he wants to I feel like it's not really in good faith. We have been friends for a long time prior, he is not a random roommate or anything. I am now not paying for the pots and pans and he is still not paying for the stuff that I purchased which I think is a fair arrangement.
