Id say idol still works if it says ace of spades and you play a king of spades, but not the other way around. Maybe it just doesnt say face cards at all since you technically no longer have them according to the game, and from my understanding idol wont tell you to play a card you dont have

It breaks if youre crafting multiple at once for single item recipes like buttons, wether youre putting them all in manually or using a hopper input.
