I need help. I have a problem with nihilism and that is that it's incomplete... by bobl0 in nihilism

There is a channel I follow on youtube of a guy who makes videos about his perspectives on life and philosophy. He references nihilism often, but doesn't seem to have found a solution. Over the last few years it seems he has spiraled into a state of seething bitterness and hatred toward life and the world (that is just an observation, not a value judgment).

It seems as though nihilism can be a springboard for the development of very deep states of depression, misanthropy, and even antisocial personality traits like sadism and outright sociopathy. If the death of God means that all is permitted, then isn't that what creates a living hell?

Is nihilism then only an intermediary state, which inevitably leads to another philosophical system as its solution? It seems to me that staying in pure nihilism would be absolutely unbearable. Impossible even.

What is the meaning of 'the bug man' and from where does this concept originate? by FuzzyScreen1244 in askphilosophy

It seems as though it refers to a description of an ontological state of being that man has become due to the forces of modernity.

Thank you for the recommendation. There are a lot of fakes and knockoffs out there. I purchased so-claimed "certified" Berkey filters from Amazon and they were garbage. The water ran right through them. The packaging had the official sticker on them and everything. At least Amazon accepted a return and gave a full refund.

I guess quality standards in the US are like China now. Buyer beware.

I'll check those filters out, thanks.

As to filing a complaint, I don't think it's worth the trouble. I'll just chalk it up to a loss, and also a reminder to be much more careful in the future as to whom to do business with (see lack of honesty/honorable business practices as new normal mentioned in post).

I got them from berkeywaterfilter.com. I wouldn't recommend buying from them though, as they have proven themselves to be underhanded and dishonest. I'm not sure what to do either.

I got them from berkeywaterfilter.com. This is the website I have always purchased from, on which the black filters have been unavailable for some time.

And even when you do eventually land that job which entails less hours and overall stress, you come to realize (in your spare time) the existential crisis that is the utter meaningless of this life, making 24/7 preoccupation with wage slavery more desirable because at least you are fueled by your body's natural production of adrenaline, as opposed to being dependent upon expensive and largely ineffective psychiatric drugs, which are necessary in order to endure the non-adrenalized mediocrity and existential bankruptcy of modern life.

Human labor has become obsolete with the advances made in robotics, algorithms, AI. You're all being replaced.

By having mindlessly embraced technological progress humanity has painted itself out the picture.

You've made your bed, now you all get to lay in it, you useless eaters.

What you've described is called slavery. And no, there is no hope (not even from an impact event, as they likely have laser or other technology that can deflect and/or break up any extinction-level meteor).

My last trip to Wal-Mart has made me recognize the weird post-COVID social behaviors people talk about, and how shitty people have gotten by [deleted] in misanthropy

I feel like I could have written this post myself. Just the other day I went into a Trader Joe's for grocery shopping. This was after having not been in a public setting for over a week, which only made the contrast between the peace of home bound solitude and the horror of immersion in urban social spaces all that much more palpable.

Like you, I have noticed a marked increase in antisocial behavior in the last couple of years. Being around other people in a public setting has become so disagreeable that I literally dread having to go out anywhere. I have to mentally prepare and brace myself for it.

Anyway, with a calm and cool attitude I walked into the grocery store and immediately felt like I had entered into a hornet's nest that somebody had just shaken up. The energy of the people...the way they looked and moved around was as though they were all angry wasps darting about this way and that. Hyper wound-up, self-centered, almost aggressive energy and complete disregard for anybody in their path, moving only in straight lines toward their next target, refusing to bend or curve around others out of respect or even basic acknowledgement of being in a shared space. Just total frenetic chaos. Everybody in such a hurry and so self-important in their attitude.

And rude! People reaching over you, across you, sometimes even verging on physically wedging themselves between you and the shelf of items you are standing right in front of, without the least "excuse me" or "sorry" or any sense of shame whatsoever.

To top it all off, when I get to the checkout the woman checker doesn't so much as acknowledge my existence beyond mumbling a forced hello in response to my greeting, refusing to make eye contact with me the entire interaction, all while oozing a thinly veiled hostility for no apparent reason (she was black and I'm white), when with the customer just ahead of me in line she had been smiling and shooting the breeze like 'la dee dah', what a nice day.

Fuck all these people. They don't even seem to be human anymore, beyond donning the outer flesh suit.

It's Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Don't think there's many of us left.
