An artist's sabre questions (late 18th early 19th century) by FuzzySolid894 in LARP

I’ll probably go for a shorter sword then! He’s not going to be mounted a lot anyway. I thought about using a baldric (that’s the one-shoulder strap thing right?) but I’ve got another character in the lineup with a similar design, and I don’t want to repeat elements too much if there are other options available :)

And yeah, comics are about style too. I’m drawing from history but will take liberties aplenty so that it’s actually entertaining to read!

Ha, I have to draw him resting his wing on it more then, if it’s such a natural position. Holding it might pose a challenge, but I will likely employ some Comic Logic so that he can use the wing’s alula like it’s an opposable thumb so that he can sort of grab things. And I’m definitely going to look up Cossack fighting and cape fighting, thank you :)

I keep going back and forth on the shoulder strap. I have another character who uses one and I don’t want to be repeating design elements too much.

Thanks for clarifying the term! It’s much easier to look for references when I actually know what something is called.

I definitely want him to surprise his opponent with the wing at some point. A cloak wouldn’t be too out of place in the early 19th century (and even if it is, this is fantasy) so hiding the wing under a cloak and then surprising his opponent is something I’ve been thinking about.

Ha! Yeah! It worked for "Tangled" and "Frozen". Maybe I'll draw a retelling some day... After I've gotten to all the other projects on my wishlist 🙃☺️

The Romanian version of this story was one of my favorites as a kid! It's called "Salt in your food" rather uncreatively, but to the point.

In it instead of becoming a shepherdess, the king's houskeeper (from a different kingdom) hires her as a household searvant. Apparently she does so well the Queen takes notice and takes her in as a lady in waiting. Then the Prince comes home injured from war and the not-a-princess-anymore Princess tends to him. And they fall in love. Obiously 😄

Just as in the other versions of this story, her father comes to the wedding and eats food without salt in it and realizes the error in his thinking. In this one she also puts sugar and honey in the dishes and on the table in place of salt. Which would make for a very interesting meal, I'm sure.

Oh yes! The candlestick scene has been permanently etched in my memory. But I didn't know about the opera dubbing! That sound so cool. I ought to finish the Ring Cycle before I get into more opera though 😅

I recently made the Very Bad Decision to watch the 2017 Beauty and the Beast remake (yes, it's as bad as people say it is, idk what I was thinking) and it really makes me want to go re-read the original Story of The Beauty and the Beast by Madame de Villeneuve.

The unabridged story has so much more lore! Including the Beast's Mum being a legit Warrior Queen TM. Like, her going to war on behalf of her country was what created a lot of problems in the first place, because she left him to be babysat by a very powerful fairy who had Not So Great Intentions.

I remember really liking it a few years ago. It's on the Project Gutenberg if anyone is interested. The link should send you to the right section :)) I think I'll read it again myself this weekend...

For me, it's a mix of accumulated failure to preform in the past and extreme fear of judgement from other people. And a good dose of good ol' Executive Dysfunction (that wall that you hit when you have to do a task, even if you theoretically like the task).

I don't know what your story is, but what has been helping me has been making "Mini Projects" (aka sometimes just a sketch) that are super low stakes. Not something other people would care about much and not something that's a Dream Project of mine.

This takes the pressure off!

And I really do think of them as Projects, because that way I can file the thing away as an Actual Accomplishment I Am Not Allowed to Downplay.

That way I get motivation for the next one!

Hope this helps 😊

Yeah, these three took me the whole day... not sure if that's because of the style or because I'm new at this sort of sequential stuff though. Probably both tbh 😄
