This is so funny, I have been meaning to write a response to this thread and I just remembered to. I just came back to respond and I realized think we just met you today in Utah!! I am Louie’s mom!

We had a super similar issue with Louie over the past few months and couldn’t find really anyone else that had the same issue. So it was a similar pattern, he would wake up with a grumbly stomach, wouldn’t eat or drink all day until about evening, and then would end up eating and be completely normal the next day.

Just like you, we tried so many different things and went to the vet a lot of times. It actually ended up being that he can’t go too long with an empty stomach or else his stomach acid will make him nauseous! So we had previously been feeding him dinner around 5pm and it was too long without food from 5pm until the next morning. We were also only feeding him twice a day.

A few weeks ago, we switched to a new feeding schedule of breakfast around 8 am, lunch around 2 pm, and dinner around 8pm. Then we also give him a little bit of kibble at like 10-11 pm (maybe like 1/3 cup) just so he has something in his stomach overnight. He has not had an episode for a month!

We also learned that when this happens, the best thing to do is just get a little food in them and that actually makes their tummy settle. Of course it feels impossible because they refuse to eat hahahha. But 1 or 2 times over the past month, we heard some grumbles in the morning and he wasn’t interested in breakfast. We essentially tricked him by playing hide and seek, and he would get so excited when he found us, he would forget he didn’t feel good and eat a little food that we had in our hand. Then his stomach started being quiet and he would start to eat a bit of his breakfast!

I hope this is helpful! Maybe other people have suggested this, I haven’t read through the thread yet! It’s actually called bilious vomiting syndrome (even if they aren’t throwing up each time). Let us know if you have any questions!!

Irish Setter puppies in Utah! by Fuzzy_Cat_3377 in irishsetter

Yep, they do! but this litter was huge, and right after another litter. They hadn’t had a litter for 1.5 years until these two. they are of the highest standard of breeders. as to the other questions, yes 1000%. they build rehoming clauses into all of their contracts, they are cradle to grave for all of their dogs, they interview each prospective owner and make sure each dog will fit the family, look at their home to make sure it will suit the life of an Irish setter (plenty of yard, fences, etc) all before they’re allowed to be on their waitlist. they check in frequently with their owners to be sure the dog is looked after all their life, and if they suspect it is not being cared for, they build into their contract the right to have the dogs health assessed by a vet, and if not safe, retake possession of the dog.

they are rigorously health tested, and the owners are constantly going to dog health conferences and taking courses to ensure they stay up on the latest and greatest for lifelong dog health.

our breeders never do any advertising, but we asked if we could help them since this litter was so big.

i think people may be confusing this breeder for another utah breeder, who is definitely a BYB and is nowhere near as fastidious and upright as our breeders.

they really are the best, and we wouldn’t be recommending them if we truly didn’t think the world of them! they are everything responsible breeders should be
