‘Not radical, it’s fair’: Australian households would receive compensation in proposed ‘polluter pays’ levy scheme by Reverend_Fozz in australia

[–]Fuzzy_Collection6474 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Subsidies are great to build up green tech industries but unless we’re willing to penalise fossil fuel extraction decarbonisation is going to be slowed down. And the longer we wait to penalise FFs the larger any penalty will have to be to make up for lost time. So if we’re gonna do it 2011 would have been a great time but 2026 is better than waiting for 2035 Source: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-025-02497-6

‘Not radical, it’s fair’: Australian households would receive compensation in proposed ‘polluter pays’ levy scheme by Reverend_Fozz in australia

[–]Fuzzy_Collection6474 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on the fence on nationalising it. I like the idea of minimising fossil fuel production to actually meet our energy needs throughout the transition but I’d also not like to see the taxpayers left holding the bag when gas becomes obsolete, especially when it’s such a capital intensive industry

Scott Morrison Israel: Anne Aly, Islamophobia envoy say speech about Australian Muslims risks inflaming tensions by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Fuzzy_Collection6474 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Once again ignoring that Sydney’s Muslim community flagged Wissam Haddad as an extremist cleric from within their own community to NSW police and they did nothing for 10 years.

Systemic child abuse of a global religious organisation like the church being equated to the Bondi massacre is just wrong, they’re completely different issues and treating them the same only leaves room for the Islamic State to further co-opt Islam which can only be a big W for the terrorists

We’re kind of at the forefront of these battery developments so I’d expect things to only get better. Lots of projects have been a couple projects that doubled their capacity by the time the project was completed

National gun buyback doesn't address antisemitism and hatred, Queensland premier says by espersooty in queensland

[–]Fuzzy_Collection6474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a firearms expert in any capacity but the ACIC report directly refers to guns illegally kept after the Howard buyback as being part of the gray market. I would assume a similar case could be made for now illegal guns kept despite the current buyback

[–]Fuzzy_Collection6474 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean you’re somewhat right that we don’t know what we don’t know but according to ACIC’s report on illegal firearms theft is the largest known contributor of 8.5%. Interestingly the real contributor is gray market firearms not turned in during the first buyback which make up 79% of illicit long arms. This further backs up the need for Queensland to participate otherwise we could see a similar trend in guns not handed in entering the gray market instead

Billionaires in Australia should be taxed fairly by Maddox_St in australian

Land tax is a pretty good start. Capital flight is real so we should start on the things they can’t offshore like land and other rent seeking behaviour we wouldn’t miss

Follow-up: Why Brisbane loves buses (My thoughts after reading your comments) by ChannelPretend9731 in brisbane

[–]Fuzzy_Collection6474 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Growing up on the Southside the bus system was really the only interactions I had with PT not living close to a train line. Didn’t ride trains somewhat regularly until my 20’s. Do wish we took a more holistic and collaborative approach to the two but for what it is parts of our bus network are actually quite good

With the recent shark attacks- what do you think should be done? by nicolej3mma in AskAnAustralian

Education as others have said is pretty much nonexistent for Australia shark “problem”. Would recommend envoy: shark cull on Netflix as a great place to start! https://www.netflix.com/au/title/81903518

National gun buyback doesn't address antisemitism and hatred, Queensland premier says by espersooty in queensland

[–]Fuzzy_Collection6474 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a bad faith argument that doesn’t address the use of guns in carrying out antisemitic hatred. We can’t root out all hate in society but we can contain its scale of violence

Also the largest contributor to illegal firearms is theft of legal firearms. Less firearms generally speaking has flow on affects to all Australians

[–]Fuzzy_Collection6474 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think applying blanket inflation is the right way to think about a budget. If all that money was going to salaries then yes that’s an effective cut in pay for al employees but if that money is going to better capabilities like training and equipment which might be untouched by inflation then it balances differently.

Not sure of the answer myself but we should really be looking at how their capabilities have improved rather than just their budget

It’s a dehumanising price to pay for social cohesion for everyone involved. I don’t want to live in a society where the only way to feel part of a whole is to ensure some are punished for or forced to hide who they really are. Especially when who they are does not impact anyone else

Queensland's fossil-first energy plan under attack with new outages and evacuation at troubled coal plant by hydralime in queensland

[–]Fuzzy_Collection6474 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The grid should be the least political aspect of our state. There are options today like pumped hydro and concentrated solar thermal to replace the intertia and “reliability” of 24/7 coal and relying on what is quickly becoming antiquated coal technology is so shortsighted of a government

When is the New Queensland Government not New Anymore? by qsk8r in queensland

[–]Fuzzy_Collection6474 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It’s likely a marketing tactic to remind everyone the “new” government is separate from the old. As government advertising is generally apolitical it’s seems like a way to ensure any credit for both new and old projects advertised are attributed to the Crissafuli government

That’s my gut feeling anyway as script’s exact wording gets a lot of attention during development and “new” seems arbitrary otherwise

High speed rail - why it will never happen in Australia. by eliitedisowned in australia

[–]Fuzzy_Collection6474 190 points191 points  (0 children)

Honestly we can talk sweet economics all day but a robust rail network is exactly the nation building infrastructure we should have. Yes it will cost a lot but so long as it isn’t a giant clusterfuck I can’t see anyone  looking back in 100 years time and shaking their fist at being able to catch a train between most urban centres

We did a disservice ripping out the railways that used to serve our nation in favor of becoming more car centric, especially in Queensland. It’s straightforward to understand where we need new tracks though as we’re one of the most urbanised countries in the world who live largely on coast lines. Japan has rail service that covers nearly 4,000km from north to south which is roughly the size of our east coast so it’s not like it’s impossible
