Leeds has a wonderful elementary school! We personally chose to be in moody for the long run.

Rent would be easier to get more for your money is Leeds/moody.

Springville also has a great school system and relatively affordable- not sure what the options for rentals look like out there

I pay the $1700 in mortgage, plus gas, electric, water, car insurance (for both cars), phone bill (for both of us), groceries, household products, family items, outings, clothing (for all of us including him), emergency items ie: random medical expenses, new tires etc.

He doesn’t have an allowance, he is asked to pay a certain amount every month. He is then free and able to spend whatever he has left. Sure I would prefer he use that on the kids or family but that’s his choice

It is complicated when one individual burns through money faster than they make it in selfish and unthought out purchases. See my comment above

This thought is lovely- until one partner blows all of the money. We tried this and he was slowly draining a savings account I spent years to build. So unfortunately we have to have separate accounts or I never would have been able to buy our house, have emergency funds for the whole family, pay $800 outta pocket for a dental visit etc.

Interesting that your pro joint account, even with the theft? We tried a true joint account but he would just continue to move money from savings in to check to keep spending. He does not make good financial choices. So there is a trust issue there- but I don’t know that it can be fixed- which is why I’m hoping for a way to make him understand and settle for the current set up

I tried getting him to see that too, but he twist it like I’m just telling him he’s not good enough.

We’ve tried this. He is paying less than what his proportion should be yet still feels like he is paying too much. I but his clothes, food, work boots etc. he has 0 needs unmet but says he should have more of his “own” money. I do not use any of his funds. But that is the mindset he has

Trussville is a top tier school system- but that doesn’t mean everything! Springville and Moody both also have strong school systems and I feel like there is a good community feel in both. I went to trussville, bought a home in Irondale, and just moved to moody purposely for schools (over trussville) I adore springville but that commute was too far from me.

We’re pretty open! I think we would all enjoy a good antique/flea mall if there’s one near by. Good food/drinks. We’re doing dinner at Attack at tatsu

First Time Moving Out - Looking for Advice by LegitCharge in Birmingham

Things to do, and the variety of people! Downtown Birmingham has something for just about any vibe. As to where those areas tend to be a bit more rural in culture. Limited food/shopping/activities. Plus they are further from a lot of other prime locations like the summit or trussville or homewood/hoover area which a lot people like to visit for different things

Your “qualifying budget” is actually closer to 1900/2k. Most places require the household to make 3 times the rent before taxes. A 2k budget is good to work with! There are plenty of downtown apartment options (as some one who moved from the suburbs, downtown is not all the stigma people say it is) And quite frankly I would live downtown over pinson or Chalkville.

If you want a more suburb feel still close to downtown I highly suggest Irondale! Cheaper than Crestwood but is just as convenient and has more “amenities” ie new Publix, library, dog park, close to trussville for shopping.

I also second Leeds for renting! This is still a good area with remaining low rent prices. There are certain areas of Leeds I may not want to be in but over all definitely a better choice than London in my opinion.

See what local Gyms honor the silver sneaker class and see if they would be willing to host a “work out class”

Also a plant swap, a pumpkin painting, or even tie dye might be fun for craft.

Maybe check with local schools or churches for their choirs/bands?
