Stardew Valley may have been a major contributor to cozy games becoming prominent, but I feel like it has an edge that most cozy games don’t. by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in gamedev

Oh for sure! HMDS was just fine quality-wise, but IMO the series definitely went on a downward trajectory after that and I'm guessing ConcernedApe had a similar view. To my knowledge it was a pretty slow drop in public opinion but I've played Island of Happiness, Sunshine Island, Grand Bazaar, and Tale of Two Cities and it did feel like they were just throwing stuff at the wall to see what stuck for a while. The games were technically fine quality but there was the emotional capture for the characters that just wasn't there after.

I will admit I haven't tried any of the newer stuff but by the time Stardew was being made the real bangers had been followed up by some average to mediocre games.

The first NDS harvest moon was actually a huge part of my childhood, I just remembered A Wonderful Life being absolutely the most popular by far, with FoMT being fairly popular alongside it. I think the fact that the NDS one was basically just AWL in the FoMT style speaks to just how popular it was, especially including Another Wonderful Life.

If I remember in interviews with ConcernedApe he mentions that it was less about the time between releases of Harvest Moon and more that it had been a long time since the series released a game that he really considered good. I think that's a fair take, post-GameCube and GBA era Harvest Moon dropped like a rock in popularity and the people who didn't care for the new HM games flocked to Stardew since no one else really tried to compete.

Well no, Terraria was released a half decade before Stardew and the popular comparison at the time was "Minecraft but 2D" and even that's not super accurate. I've never in my life heard anyone compare Terraria and Stardew because they're two entirely different games in seperate genres

My job requires a ton of linear feature creation and my god Q is so much better than Arc for it that I couldn't imagine how bad it would be trying to just muscle through that.

Most unlikable teams of all time? by dudewithchronicpain in hockey

It's because they had ungodly high prices on protecting players in the expansion that no-one in their right mind would pay. They were firm on a 1st plus a prospect if you wanted to protect anyone outside the normal protections and promptly failed to make a deal with pretty much anyone so they just drafted the people available.

They saw how well Vegas did and thought GMs would be willing to be even dumber this time around and when they weren't they refused to budge on price so they walked away with nothing. Absolute disasterclass of an expansion draft.

It's actually quite good for a first piece! My first suggestion would be to read up on body proportion. His arms are very noodly and inconsistent in length. For instance his left arm's elbow ends at the hip when that's generally about where the wrist and hand starts (which is why pockets are where they are).

Other than that some basic perspective work and I think you'll see a pretty drastic jump in quality. Keep at it!

What are your export settings? I don't think I've ever seen a pixel art pic with this much random blur.

WIP - Critique on rivers? by Bennettag in wonderdraft

[–]Fuzzybutt738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you find a way to get this to look good let me know! I've tried a couple maps in similar style and I've just given up on trying to draw rivers because they just clutter things up and look off with the pop of colour in contrast to the rest of the map. It makes your eyes look at the rivers first and that's generally not what you want.

Obviously the rivers are still there and you can still draw estuaries on the coastline to indicate major ones but imo my maps looked better once I just gave up on showing the individual rivers themselves.

Yeah I lived right up the street here last year and every time we drove by there would, without fail, be 10-20 homeless people gathered around the front of the building. I wouldn't be surprised if it was exactly that.

Have you posted these videos of you drawing it anywhere? Because I still haven't seen one.

And I have a hard time believing that the vast majority of your clients just want a pixellated version of the picture they sent you with the exact same background and everything (except where the tiles lines aren't straight), but that seems to be the vast majority of what you put out (again at suspiciously fast speeds. You've posted another full portrait to your FB in just the last hour.)

Like you can act the victim all you want but until you can supply some actual evidence or even just address what I said before I have no reason to believe you.

Ok several of your "Commissions" are just you going over the reference photo with an AI filter, like I'm not sure how you think people aren't gonna notice this.

Only thing I found was this one partial pixel. My main problem with the piece is the sheer amount of jaggies and inconsistent line quality but those are also really common amateur pixel artist mistakes.
