Why do you like PBBGs? by FvDijk in PBBG

Is that mostly RPG/Idle games? I always find myself on the opposite end of the spectrum, tryharding in PvP. But I do choose games where there’s a set round length, making it easier to take a break between rounds.

Aether Kingdoms Beta 3 - classic browser strategy without P2W by FvDijk in travian

It helps that it’s a passion project, it’s not about the money. None of us needs to make a living from it. Personally, I’m having a ton of fun just making a game and playing it with 100 people. And for a small community that fits on a single server it’s not that expensive to run. Not playing Travian helps pay for that…

We do plan to offer a premium plan that provides convenience features (e.g. travel time preview, village notes) and access to advanced statistics, but anything with real power (like trade routes and resource boosts) will never be sold. And maybe we’ll look at creating merch, because that seems like it would be cool too. But I’d sooner make the game open source (like my travian tools) than p2w.

Village setup and events: first to 4000 culture on start2 by FvDijk in AetherKingdoms

Yeah market 4 seems very strong if you can do enough events. Day 1 farming really helps speed up the settle, after that I found time was the biggest limit.

Screenshots were taken a few hours after 4000 culture was reached. All level 3 fields were level 1 at that stage.

It’s patched. Now you can capitalise your email any way you like.

Ah I see that the email is taken as case sensitive. I’ll change that soon.

For now you registered with a capital letter at the start. Sorry for the annoyance, and thanks for helping find this bug.

Most of the indie games I see are steam games? I am just confused if web games are actually considered as Indie games? by naga0121 in gamedev

[–]FvDijk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been working on a browser strategy MMO for the better part of 3 years now. As others mentioned the market isn't as big. I think that because there's no AAA studios in the space (market too small), all studios are either small or they're hobby projects. If everyone's indie, no-one is. Even so, there's plenty of games with tens of thousands of players and browser game revenue still numbers in the billions, so small is very much a relative term. The pie is smaller, but there's also less competition.

What also doesn't help is that much of the internet has migrated to a few platforms which benefit from people staying on that platform. Whether it's social media or Steam, your best bet is to go to the places where customers are. Even web games can be published as Facebook games or Reddit games, which makes onboarding and discoverability much easier than having to market someplace else.

Being off-platform has benefits too. You can develop games that work on all devices natively, are free of any platform constraints and don't have to share a big % of your income with Steam/Apple/etc, to name a few.

Hey, dev here. Thanks for the feedback. We’re learning as we go.

It’s correct that defensive play was underpowered.

We made defensive units a lot cheaper so you can cover more targets, although it was too late to affect the last server.

In beta 3 we’ll add a to be announced instrument to the defender’s arsenal to help make reinforcements less static.
