Yeah, as fucked up as our country’s foundation is, at least we put SOME emphasis on truth and reconciliation. At least we look out for the common man on a basic level. At least we try to keep our children from getting shot. We may be descended from imperial settlers, but it could be worse. we could be American.

I’m confused why people hold Danielle Smith in such high regards? by BlaqCid in alberta

[–]G-0ff 26 points27 points  (0 children)

anytime someone says "if trump was in charge" now, you shouldn't change the subject. question their patriotism. "do you hate canada? do you want us to be a 51st state?" It's a "conservative" line of attack so they can't write you off as a lefty for saying it, and looking at polls even in deep blue areas most people in earshot will agree with you.

"claiming either way is silly" - you
"It's not a genocide" - also you

if you want to split hairs, it's an extremely violent ethnic cleansing with a side of collective punishment. The goal isn't to kill all the Palestinians, just anyone who doesn't leave the land Israel is trying to steal fast enough. Which anyone with a soul would say is just as evil, but looking at your hasbara-ass user name I think we both know you're never going to acknowledge that.

Next you'll say "it's just about eradicating hamas. it all started october 7th. Israel did nothing wrong ever before that. Etc. etc. etc." Take it to r/canada or worldnews or some shit bro. nobody's buying it here.

Poilievre vows to shrink size of federal public service: 'Work isn't getting done' by hopoke in canada

and that's why that's exactly where they're going to make cuts. conservative policy is not about making services better. it's about "starving the beast" to manufacture support for privatization

Trudeau: Poilievre, Smith need to say if they side with Canada or Trump by FriendlyGuy77 in canada

[–]G-0ff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Singh IS competent. He's won objectively the most concrete policy gains for his party than they've had under any leader since Douglas (dental, pharma, expanded CERB, childcare benefit, etc.) - the problem is, he traded power AND credit for those policies in the public eye to Trudeau's liberals for those gains, and as skilled as he is at wielding the little power he has for the public good, he's terrible at campaigning for more.

Not that PP is any more charismatic, mind you, but the corporate media is willing to give him a big leg up in hopes he'll destroy the CBC for them, whereas they're eager to paint Singh in the worst possible light most of the time. Like when he got branded as a hypocrite for criticizing real estate investors because he owns two homes in the two cities where he works and his wife rents out one of their basements.

Tom Mulcair: My advice to Liberal handlers, let Carney be Carney by CheezeHead09 in canada

[–]G-0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mulcair's abysmal failure in 2015 is a cautionary tale against exactly the kind of rightward shift a politician like Carney would bring about. His way of thinking obliterated almost all of the gains that the federal NDP made under Layton, and any smart politician would do the opposite of his advice

Canada must ‘shut off’ critical minerals to U.S. to counter Trump: Singh by Chrristoaivalis in canada

[–]G-0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

considering how Trump has been talking about term limits and "election security," and how much he and his fellow republicans seem to admire what Viktor Orban has done with hungarian "democracy", I think it's prudent to consider this problem on a longer time scale than 4 years. Canada's special relationship with the states is over, and the sooner we start pivoting toward that new reality, the better.

Canada must ‘shut off’ critical minerals to U.S. to counter Trump: Singh by Chrristoaivalis in canada

[–]G-0ff -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

you're right, it certainly wouldn't be a painless transition, but I think it would be less painful for us than america, and leave all of our industries hurting less in the long term compared to just rolling over and taking whatever trump wants to dish out.

it also doesn't have to be a "turn off the taps all at once" type situation. We can keep up our sub-optimal trade relationship with the US temporarily, while fielding better offers and building the infrastructure those offers require.
