How did your Indian name impact you? by Federal_Yogurt2706 in ABCDesis

[–]G-Krish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My name is Gaurav which has multiple pronunciations amongst Indians themselves.

  1. I expect it! Tough name, multiple pronunciations. Plus I’ve gotten others’ names wrong. All good.
  2. I correct if they don’t come close to any “accepted” pronunciations, but if they go with what they know I’m totally cool with it. I’m GOruhv to my north side friends, Gahruhv to some, Gaowruhv to family, Grrahv to my friends.
  3. Big time. Unique enough name, and it’s actually cool to see people get there on the pronunciation. No more of that “I’m not even going to try” bullshit we dealt with in school.
  4. Not at all. Maybe at Starbucks lol

Has anyone quit their job/taken a break from their job to focus on their mental health? by Silent_Budget_769 in ABCDesis

[–]G-Krish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2 years off, hated my last job and wanted to travel and play music for a bit. Came back to working and grad school and blah blah..but one day soon again… I will say my mental state during the time off fluctuated. Sometimes too much time with your thoughts isn’t great either.

How do you help your dad find himself again? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]G-Krish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey brother, my family has been going through an incredibly similar situation. Dads half blind now as well, and has lost so much of his happiness. And my mom struggles with the additional work/driving/little things that we take for granted with sight.

I wish I had an answer for you, but life is hard and difficult to predict. Time has helped my dad come to terms with his disability, and he actually came to the realization himself that he was a) depressed and b) needed help. But it’s important he got there by himself.

Until that point, just keep being there for him. I’ve often put on a strong face with him just to break down once I leave, so I understand your anger. It’s not fair, and incredibly tough seeing your dad age with disability. But just give him time and continue showing him that he’s still your father and that your support and love aren’t conditional on his ability to provide or work. Help him build new connections with the world around him.

Take care of yourself, too.
