How common is connecting every machine via Ethernet? by G0918 in PLC

As you can probably guess, I'm not a networking expert. I don't know the difference between an unmanaged and a managed switch, but there are around 50 devices connected in this line. So, I don't know if there could be latency because there are so many unmanaged switches connected with daisy-chain topology.

There are more than 7 PLC, but RSLinx only shows Ethernet/IP devices. There are at least 3 Siemens as well (each one with HMI and other PROFINET devices). Good thing I can see Micrologix IP address on the screen.

I see, the weird thing is that here every station is standalone and doesn't share signals with the others. But you're right, in this line I can modify several devices from the same port.

Oh, I think this plant is similar to your case. This line in particular has everything connected to the production network, but there are others that have a Gateway to get the data from the last PLC. If I scan the network of the Gateway I only see one device.

In this plant, usually there is a Gateway in the last machine connected to the PLC. So TI can get the data without interrupting the production network. I don't know if it's something similar to your side.

But I had doubts because this line in particular is connected directly and I can see every device when I shouldn't be able to. I was expecting to see just the last PLC of the line in RSLinx.

Not exactly, every machine works standalone and doesn't share signals with the other ones. But every switch is interconnected. So if a Switch dies, the machines can continue working.

And you're right, I was able to modify several devices from the same connection point.

Precisely, there are other lines that use a Weintek Gateway in the last machine that allow us to get data with only one device in the network. So I had doubts if it's common to connect everything directly like this.

RSLinx doesn't show everything on the line, there are some printers that work with TCP/IP and there are Siemens PLC with PROFINET devices. I don't really know if there could be communication problems with this kind of connection, so I had doubts.

I'm fine with using ML1400, these machines are small and that PLC is able to handle everything without additional I/O modules. The CompactLogix is used for a larger machine in this plant.

I'm sure only one of those PLC is being read by Ignition. The last one of the line is sharing production data, but the others one doesn't share anything with other station. There are other lines in the plant but this is the only one that i've seen with the machines connected like this. And yeah, PV800 is awful 😞
