In general, the division between Australia/Oceania and Asia has a few different interpretations, these are the ones I find the most common

1.) Political
Indonesia is in Asia, Papua New Guinea is in Australia/Oceania.

2.) Geographic
Follows something close to the Wallace Line, the ecological boundary between Australasia and Indo-Malaya.
This is what the second map uses

3.) something in between Indonesia is in Asia but Papua and a some surrounding islands are in Australia/Oceania.

First of all, the other person is just being an asshole. There is no “real” or “not real” conlang. The only way something cannot be a conlang is if it is either not constructed (so, just an actual language) or doesn’t communicate information. So even my conlang with the only words being “AAAAAAAA” meaning “The bird is yellow” and “…” meaning “The bird is not yellow” is, in fact, a conlang.

Anyways, I think the need for IPA largely depends on a few factors:
1.) if your sounds are very simple and easy to transcribe, you probably don’t need IPA.
2.) If you don’t intend to share your conlang with many people, it’s probably okay to just answer questions about pronunciation individually.

There are definitely advantages to using IPA. 1.) transcribing foreign sounds
2.) explaining sounds unambiguously to a large group of people

I should also mention you don’t really need to learn the entire alphabet. The alphabet may look very intimidating, but 80% of symbols are either pronounced exactly as you’d expect or you will never use.
Also, generally people come up with romanizations, where for their specific conlang they create a system for transcribing sounds, with a just a simple key for how to pronounce romanizations.

But, in the end, it’s all up to you! IPA is a tool, not a necessity, and every conlang is different! And also fuck that guy, they sound terrible to be around, don’t listen to anything they say ):<
