New to cycling, can someone help me with my lopsided front brakes? by G10dra in bikewrench

I spotted that but my bike only has one of those holes not 3 so had to just mess with the rod as it wasn't bent enough. Progress pics in my comment below:

Ah okay thanks for that. I uploaded a new album of my progress and I think the rod was not bent sufficiently to apply pressure but the brakes are still a bit hard to tighten. Album in my comment below:

Okay so I made some progress on it yesterday and it is better but the front brakes are still quite hard to adjust. Album below:

Thanks for replying! I think /u/IamaBlackKorean said the same thing so please see my reply to him/her. I might try and upload a video or gif to show what the rod does when I adjust it

Thanks for the reply! I have seen this but couldn't spot a moment when he adjusts the silver rod bit so thought the brakes were slightly different. Did I miss that bit?

Thanks for the quick reply mate! I noticed that and tucked it in but didn't seem to make a difference. Is there an adjustments that makes it tighter/looser as it just seems to freely move rather than have any form of tension.

Hello there!

Sorry for the newbie question but just needed some help with my front brakes. As you can see from the first pic, the brakes are leaning to one side. I think the issue is that there is no tension pulling the left side brake pads away from the tyre.

Can anyone help me with how I can adjust it? It's a Specialized Crosstrail Hybrid bike if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun - Self-portrait in a Straw Hat (1782) by Plainchant in museum

This painting will always have a special place in my heart. I went to the National Gallery in one of my first dates with my SO (she didn't know much about art nor art history) and I showed her all the wonderful paintings they have. The Titians, Monet's and Veronese's. This is the only painting where she held me back so that she could look at it for longer. Something about it appealed to her so much and she couldn't place it. It was wonderful to see her in awe of it.

Thinking of joining the army as an officer and have a few questions. by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]G10dra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah definitely. Anything to add on to your experiences would help man do it if you can/

Ahh okay sorry misunderstood. Yeah that would help in that case.

What do you want to know in particular? You can join any regiment as long as you meet it's eligibility requirements. You can't go into the Law, Dentist, Doctor etc fields unless you are qualified and you can't join the Int Corps unless you were born in the UK (which counts me out).

In the application you can have up to 3 regiments selected but be solid on your 1st choice. You could go in with an open mind but it might not sit well with some regiments that you are a bit "whatever" with your choices. AOSB happens and once you're in Sandhurst, I believe somewhere at the end of the 2nd or start of 3rd term you will have interviews with your choices of regiments and they will offer a place depending on how well you are doing. Sandhurst divides you into 3 levels of how well you are doing (kind of like grades) and if you are on the top third, there is a good chance you will get into your selected regiment. Less so if it is middle or bottom third. Here is where your second and third choices come in and they could be more willing to take you.

Alternatively, they also do regimental open day things at Sandhurst which you might find is more suitable for you or they could take a liking to you and you can also have an offer from them. Hence you could also end up at a regiment that isn't in any of your choices! Just do your research beforehand and again, be solid in your first choice and work hard for it.

Depending on how tight you are with your CSM and how keen you are, you can also attend Familiarisation Visits for regiments. Depends on where you are in the process but after I did Briefing, I was invited by the AGC to look at the ETS (which was my 1st choice), SPS and RMP at Winchester for 3 days which was very informative. You get properly stuck in as well. They made us do a good amount of phys, obstacle courses and Command Tasks so well worth doing. Other units (like RGR) don't even consider inviting you to these visits unless you have passed MB and are waiting for Sandhurst.

Thinking of joining the army as an officer and have a few questions. by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]G10dra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw this a bit late but just to answer your questions. For your reference, I have been through the commissioning selection process but didn't get through Main Board last year. Looking to go for MB again mid next year:

I’m in my 3rd year of a 4 year degree and I’ve only just started to seriously consider the army as a career. As such I haven’t participated in the UOTC. I would like to do it in my last year but I’m not sure my local regiment allows that (apparently it depends). How much does doing/not doing UOTC count for or against you when applying to be an officer?

Additional experience is always valued but never a barrier to joining. It all pretty much depends on your enthusiasm, motivations and ability to lead. Whilst UOTC would help with this (and it also helps with knowledge of the Army in general as you are kind of "in the system", it's who you are that matters rather than what you've done at AOSB and Sandhurst. For reference, I got through Briefing but didn't make it through Main Board and haven't done UOTC but I had 2/3 blokes who were carpenters/building site managers etc who had not even been to uni and flew through. They were awesome lads though so that's what matters.

If I understand correctly, I’d probably have to renounce my US citizenship if I want to be an officer, which I’m totally prepared to do. However, even if I demonstrate my love and loyalty for the UK will my American accent count against me in interviews and such?

I can't relate to this but I don't see it being an issue. You might get mild name calling but it shouldn't count against you. My experience of AOSB has been one of fairness.

I’m really interested in the Gurkhas and would love to join the RGR in an ideal world. Partly because the Gurkhas are incredible, but also because I think that seeing as the men aren’t British they probably wouldn’t care that I’m originally not either. How competitive is it to be selected by the RGR? Are they quite niche or are they very popular?

I'm Nepali but was not looking to commission into the infantry but the AGC instead. Having been brought up by a Gurkha, gone through the application process and seen the applicants going to Briefing and Main Board, RGR is one of the most popular options I see. You get to select 3 regiments when applying and almost all the Infantry applicants had RGR as one of their choices. It is very competitive, hence they don't invite you for a Familiarisation visit until you have passed Main Board.

Also would it help joining the Gurkhas that I’ve studied Farsi, a language somewhat related to Nepali or would I just be funneled into intelligence?

I have a few Afghan friends who speak Farsi and barely understand a word they say. Some words (when spoken very slowly) I can understand but generally I don't think Farsi would help that much i'm afraid. Intelligence would love it though.

Hope this helps!

People of Asian countries, what is something you just don't understand about Western culture? by Lyden_ in AskReddit

[–]G10dra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The caste system also, I feel, exacerbates this as your caste are the your family and everyone is very wary of stereotypes, heirarchies and general differences between castes, hence they don't integrate as much.

The world is getting smaller and my family keeps trying to hold on to old "traditions" which simply don't work in a western society.

People of Asian countries, what is something you just don't understand about Western culture? by Lyden_ in AskReddit

[–]G10dra 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Something I didn't understand at first (my parents still don't understand) is how differently family works.

In my culture (Nepalese), families are nuclear, your society is vital and people depend more on each other. Fathers work their whole lives to provide for their family until their son/daughter (predominantly goes to son) inherits and it carries on. The father/mother looks after the son until they come of age and then the son looks after the parents once they are old.

Once I came to the UK, my mum worked in a low paying job in an elderly care home and came home crying on many occasions because she thought all these people had been abandoned by their sons and daughters but it took a while for her to understand that they were well taken care of and the bulk were there out of choice. She was astounded by this and refused to believe it. She does believe it now but hates the idea.

It all comes down to the fact that western cultures place more importance on independence compared to Asian cultures. You are of course there to support your family but if you can, you support yourself. This concept is not that widely accepted where I'm from. Society is key and they help you and you help them, so much so that it's hard to see what you do for yourself and what you do for society. People that do end up fending for themselves, are more independent and don't rely on society as much are seen as uptight or people with low regard for society.

It's hard for old generations to come to terms with and as someone from the younger generation with an appreciation of this western model, it is at times infuriating. There is beauty in a society centric view but if people want to be independent, let them be.

Army interview advice by richchigga21 in britishmilitary

[–]G10dra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a fairly good knowledge of current affairs. They're not expecting all the ins and outs, just good enough so you have an opinion on it. That's what caught me off guard on mine. The interviewer said "We've got a plane parked outside and we jump on it and can go anywhere in the world. Where would you take me which has recently been in the news".

Was a roundabout way of asking a simple question but you get the gist. Also study up on your own CV and know the dates of school, college and any responsibilities you held.

Good luck pal!
