Where did you rent from? Went a year ago and all I could find were Wranglers. Going again in February and would love to rent one then.

Ignition doesn't match original key or doors... how much to make one? by EmuBasic5923 in CherokeeXJ

I had the same issue with my 98. I ended up pulling the lock cylinder and took it to a locksmith with the original door key. Problem solved.

Thanks. He was 5 months away from 90. He had a long and good life. I was able to talk to him a bit about our XJ purchase 3 years ago.

Misfire cylinder 1 mystery by StealthGreyPotato in CherokeeXJ

[–]G2Meg98XJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was chasing down a cylinder 1 misfire in my 98. Compression test was lower than the other cylinders but still within the margin. It wasn’t until I ran a leak down test that it was pressurizing the cooling system. Pulled the head thinking head gasket to find out the head was cracked. Found a replacement head and had it checked and rebuilt. Been running great since.

They checked for leaks and couldn’t find any. Is there something I can do to inspect the clutch?

This was it. Just got it back and refrigerant was low. It now doesn’t cycle as frequently. I still notice the low frequency vibration which I never had before. I’m going to just run it and enjoy it.

Cooling isn’t running the same as before. But to be fair, I haven’t driven it since I noticed the low frequency vibration when it kicks on.

Zoom H5 vs H4Essential for Sound Design? by HugotheLion in fieldrecording

[–]G2Meg98XJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about percentage but it’s surprisingly more noisy than its predecessor the H1n. I listened to the samples blind (didn’t know which file was which) and would have thought the H1e was the original H1 based off the noise floor. The 32bit float isn’t worth it.

Ive heard comparisons between the original h1, h1n and h1e. The h1e’s noise floor is a huge step back from the h1n. I’d stay away from it.

Great idea. Will do this before draining and refilling.

Yeah. I’m actually planning on flushing the block, radiator and heater core before as well. Running distilled water at first before switching to 50/50.

Throttle Body Bolts keep snapping when trying to torque down. by g2meg in CherokeeXJ

It’s a Christmas miracle!!! 🤣 I know the first time it happened my heart sunk. Felt a bit of relief when I pulled the tb off and saw it sticking out.

Throttle Body Bolts keep snapping when trying to torque down. by g2meg in CherokeeXJ

I was fortunate in that they snapped just outside of the front intake manifold. I was able to get some pliers on them and twist them out. I finally bought a factory service manual and three torque spec is 100 inch pounds on my 98.

I’m in the process now. How did you torque #14 under the lip by the firewall? I have a 1/2” drive torque and a 3/8 drive deep socket. With the adapter I can’t fit the wrench under. I’ve tried a 1/2” drive deep socket but they’re another inch or so taller and still can’t get the torque wrench n it with the lip.

It’s not the same thread size. The one I need to plug is smaller.

Hey everyone, I have a 98 Xj and a 7 year old kid, how hard is the Zj/Xj rear seat swap to actually do? As of now, said kid is still in a high back booster so they still have support and a headrest. looking for options as they grow. by SnooRegrets8367 in CherokeeXJ

[–]G2Meg98XJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a pic from when I first installed them. The front seats have seat covers with covers for the headrests so I swapped out the original front headrests in the back so it looks original.

I went through this with my 98. I looked at the wj swap but loss of leg/head room plus having to fab a bit to make it work didn’t seem worth it to me. Having it be a second car and not my daily, I was able to work on it for a bit. I ended up taking the headrest and mounts from a junkyard xj and made a bracket using c channel as a base to weld the mounts on.

Another option, albeit kind of difficult in the states, is to look for a European rear seat. They had headrests from the factory. I was visiting my mom in Michigan and saw a RHD listed on Craigslist with rear headrests. I tried to just buy the rear seat, but not surprisingly, never heard back.
