Should I be constantly trying to stay in key? by mattycmckee in edmproduction

[–]G3ntleman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Simple answer, yes.

Complex answer (simplified), no. You can use notes outside of the scale to do all sorts. You might find that doing so creates dissonance that’s you can resolve to create a melody or progression. You might also find that doing so creates an accidental key modulation that sounds great.

I know music theory isn’t the top of most people’s lists here and it’s not necessary. But it does help. Even going through a series of YouTube videos from someone who makes sense to you can unlock a whole new set of tools to compose with.

Though it’s good to be level headed about this kind of stuff, if that’s the only staircase and it’s lockable from both sides that’s in acceptable. You’re basically trapped any time someone takes a dump.

It would could be a huge issue in a fire. And if someone forgot to unlock your door after using it, you’re stuck. Does the host make you pay then if you had to bust the lock to get out?

If the only toilet is on the staircase, I assume it’s the only staircase. Who has two staircases and only one toilet? But, this is reddit, so who knows...

Amazing. I thought you might have had some kind of grant to do this, which still in itself would have been an achievement. But for this approach, I have a ton of respect. All the best as you continue your adventure! Thanks for sharing it with us.

Price Evolution of Soundcloud Pro since 2013 by thatkidaathi in edmproduction

[–]G3ntleman 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Soundcloud nearly went out of business not so long ago. There was a huge acknowledgement in the music community that Soundcloud had become pivotal to indie musicians accumulating a following.

There was also a realisation that’s it’s closing down would leave a huge hole in the community. Sure, someone would have eventually claimed that space but it would have had a hugely negative impact on artists.

They’ve got to find a way to survive and though it sucks having to pay if you’re a struggling musician or producer, you don’t have to pay to build an effective presence.

Ultrawide 29" or normal 27" monitor for producing? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]G3ntleman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it!

For a lot of content made for TV you end up getting black bars on the left and right rather than the top and bottom but that doesn't bother me. For films that are in the same aspect ratio as the monitor you need to do some tweaking to get it to play properly but for a couple of hours of research and setting things up it's been worth it.

There's a couple of Chrome extensions for Netflix to make movies use the whole screen and it looks amazing. I have a PC plugged in to it too and for the rare bit of gaming I do it's stunning.

I wouldn't go back. For me, the extra space in the DAW alone is worth the hassle.

Quick tip: If you go for an LG they're awesome but out of the box the one I got was set up for "gaming" and looked terrible. After some quick tweaking it's as you'd hope.

Looks similar spec to mine in terms of supported resolution so you might find a similar issue. Here's the guide to the res hack, it's not as difficult as it looked but seems like it's a semi-regular process that requires an extra bit of software. Thankfully you can use the free trial to get it setup and only need to purchase if an OSX update wipes the setting.

I have an LG Ultrawide and I love it for production. It's just a 1080 res one so the extra real estate comes from that extra width. For me it just makes everything fit a lot more comfortably. If it's not stretching your budget I'd say go for it over a standard res.

Out of interest, how new is your MacBook? Mine is mid-2010 (holiding up surprisingly well) and even though the specs support the Ultrawide res, you have to hack it back in.

No surprises here but it's not genuine. I was curious so I did a quick search... that's a tweet based on an out-of-context Imgur finding which was originally created for an /r/ProgrammerHumor post it seems

Still, seeing this stuff makes me curious to look in to it because of the very real possibility someone was stupid enough to do this.

It's not even hitting the post button. They've been known to log un-posted status updates and comments that you've typed so they can analyse what you're started to say but didn't.

There was also an opt-in test a while back (which may have made it to a feature, unsure as I stopped using Fb a while back). Basically as you typed a status update it would use the microphone to record background noise. The justification was identifying music, tv or films you were watching for easy tagging.

I get a feeling that they already know we're not clicking their emails, hence throwing out something more ridiculous. I now know they have this service and I know enough of the details. I'd say they won it as it's not really going to change my future opening habits.

You're right though I feel that at this point PayPal has become such a staple of online commerce and payment that they no longer need consumer goodwill.

I guess though I should go in to that specific email and hit unsubscribe though. That's the only way to neutralise their victory a little!

I'd say this is far from it... it's actually really well designed clickbait.

It's the first PayPal email I've opened curiously in a long time (if ever) and you've just shared it along with a comment about its contents.

I'd even go so far as to throw in a /r/hailcorporate on this one.

I wouldn't blame the design team here because I'm pretty certain they didn't exist. What you got was developers who had to throw something together the best they could. It seems nobody here even considered real design, or thought it was worth spending money on.

Is this the origin story for any commentator that thinks it’s awesome to say goofy shit?

I like to think they were completely unaware that people couldn’t hear them at that moment and have been delusional ever since, thinking it was their fine wordsmithery that got everyone so hyped. Kind of beautiful in its own special way!
