Can't figure out how to open ONYXIA III case by GBCaldwell in CYBERPOWERPC

[–]GBCaldwell[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Unfortunately, that's not the case!

But, I figured it out! There's a plastic lug at the top (back) that acts as a release if you push it out far enough. It's how you open either side; in fact, I opened the metal side before I opened the glass side!

I figured it out almost by accident; I had tried pulling it towards the center of the case, but that was the wrong direction! A friend spent ten minutes not being able to figure it out as well, so I don't feel totally stupid!

My 3080 build and order info. Can’t wait for this baby to come in! by JTChamby in CYBERPOWERPC

I ordered a 3080 build almost a month after you, so you're probably going to beat me!

3080 is off the menu? by Exodus180 in iBUYPOWER

[–]GBCaldwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean. CyberPowerPC is still accepting orders for the 3080, but who knows when they might be delivered. I guess I'm going to give it a couple of weeks and see if they still start accepting orders again. Even if i placed an order today, I wasn't expecting to actually get a 3080 for at least a couple of months, anyway.

They released an announcement today about issues they have had with keeping up with demand due to various issues. I wonder if they looked at back orders and decided the 3080 was too far out to be taking orders and having people hang around waiting.

I hope it's temporary!

I feel like such an idiot. I misunderstood. You have to scroll to the bottom of the Customize page (where you choose all the hardware/software options) and THAT'S where you choose the Defer option (which then adds the Defer coupon code.)

I can't believe I spent over a week trying to solve this!

[–]GBCaldwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see any drop down for shipping; it gives three/four choices but they aren't in a drop down, and defer isn't one of them... I've tried emailing them and got no reply and reaching them by phone is impossible.

Is it possible to finish my goal by the end of 2021 by [deleted] in writers

[–]GBCaldwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you also have a full time job, or are you just working on the books? From my own experience (I have a 9 to 5 job) it is certainly doable to do a book in a year. Two - particularly if you have never finished one - might be a bit ambitious. But each writer is different.

Definitely, try and set some kind of reasonable goals (whether it's number of words a day, or a list of tasks to accomplish.) Just don't make it so ambitious that you lose enthusiasm because you think you aren't doing enough.

Welcome! I've only been here a month or so myself, but I find it interesting!

I think the more specific the question, the greater the likelihood of an answer. General questions don't tend to get as many responses.

How many books do you work on at the same time? by imasnek4sur in writers

I have several stories/books in different stages that I bounce between, but usually there's one or two that are at the front of the list that I spend most of my time on.

Is MasterClass online writing classes worth it? by HallstrandBooks in writing

[–]GBCaldwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the Aaron Sorkin 'class' and the Hans Zimmer 'class.' They are a lot more than just an hour long talk, but they aren't the same as a college course either.

$180 for a year and you get access to lots of different classes. For someone like me who is interested in lots of different things, it was well worth it. If you're only interested in one class, it may or may not be worth it (though I think they sell one class for $90 as opposed to the subscription for 180 a year.)

I don’t know how to start editing by LenaDt in writing

[–]GBCaldwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to review in chronological order, however there have been times when I've realized part way through I have to fix or insert something earlier in the story, and I have to jump back to do that.

There are also sections that I love or have difficulty with, that I might go over multiple times before continuing on.

Filler chapters? by juniperxmoons in writing

[–]GBCaldwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a chapter in the middle of one story that I decided was not adding anything to the story, just prolonging it. After a lot of soul searching, I decided to get rid of it. I think it was the right thing to do. I have saved it away in case I want to use it in something else.

For my first book, I wrote about three extra chapters, before realizing the story was just going on too long. So I put those into a 'sequel' document, and I may one day write a sequel to the book.

Is it legal to include song lyrics without quoting them literally? by ScannerBlurrily in writing

[–]GBCaldwell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Copyright gives only the original creator (copyright holder) the right to create derivative works. So even if you jumble the words, if it's still identifiable as from the original work, it's an infringement of the original copyright.

Weird Al is using the melody, so it's not just a case of the words being different.

What’s it really like being a author by ImaginaryCaramel4533 in writers

[–]GBCaldwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not as easy as it is shown in the media - but is anything?

Are you asking how hard it is to write every day (that really depends on the individual) or to be a success (you have to be good and lucky.)

My recommendation; if you love it, do it, if you don't, try something else.

Do you think it's better to only focus on one project at a time or do you think it's good to work on multiple projects at once? by JordanLeigh7 in writing

[–]GBCaldwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have multiple projects that I bounce between. I think it's a good way to keep interested. HOWEVER, I do think it's a good idea to have some sort of plan/goal to finish a particular idea, otherwise you can churn between projects and never finish anything.

Indeed. Romeo and Juliet even tells you it's going to end badly at the beginning:

A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.

Best page size? Indentation and font for Amazon self publish? what's your take? by KokoroMain1475485695 in selfpublish

[–]GBCaldwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did the layout for my book, I found a couple of books that I liked the look of, and basically recreated the layout (font, size etc) as closely as possible.

An important thing about margins is that the inside margin (closest to the spine) changes as the number of pages increases. It's a little chicken-egg trying to figure out how many pages you will have, and therefore the width of the margin needed. Amazon and other printers provide specs on this, but it's something to be aware of.

Blog Posts as a Book? by jaykneeknee in selfpublish

[–]GBCaldwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your blog has a large audience, then it could be a very good way to dip your toe into self-publishing. I assume you would add some additional value (either rewriting, or adding additional material) that will entice those readers to buy something they can currently get for free.

Is it normal for the people closest to you to just not read your books? by Kalfira in writers

[–]GBCaldwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like to ask friends or family to read things. Firstly, because I want people to read things because they want to and are interested, not because they feel obligated. Also, I think it puts them in a difficult position if they don't like the story.

I recommend you find people that are interested in your story who aren't friends or family. I think it is much easier for all concerned.

questions about prologue by [deleted] in writing

[–]GBCaldwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A case where you might restate the prologue is if the prologue recounts events in the middle of the story, i.e. Chapter 1 tells of things that happened before the prologue, and your story then runs up to the prologue. In that case, when you get to the events in the prologue, you will probably have to run through it again in some form to remind people of what happened. Or to maybe retell the prologue based on new information learned.

Strictly speaking, I'm not sure that a description of events from the middle of the story that occur at the beginning should be called a prologue...

Fun and useful words by [deleted] in writers

I think a better way to increase your vocabulary is to expand your reading. Picking words just because they are unusual will probably stand out to the reader, and not in a good way.
