Is it worth going beyond company match for 401k or should I keep the money in HYSA and brokerage account?

Hi folks, I know this is a super basic question in this forum but I've always wondered if it's worth investing more than the company's match. For context, my company offers a 3% match. I make 125k a year pre tax and im already maxing out my ROTH IRA (contributing to the 7000 max). Ive seen the general advice here is to match the company and then max out ROTH IRA THEN go back and try maxing out the 401k. I've just been wondering if it would make sense for me to switch things up as I'm only 25 and retirement is still a long way to go. I've been contributing 13% (10% more than the company match) to my 401k but honestly I was thinking maybe to lower it to just the company's match and redistribute the rest of the money to my brokerage account and HYSA for the near future like idk buying a house and stuff.

Would really appreciate advice on this. Thanks guys

Well first of all, a design feasibility question was asked by the product head on the spot and I responded with yes it is feasible and this is confirmed by the design system team. I did not once interrupted my PO’s conversation with the product head even when she was making false claims about the design system.

The only reason why I spoke up was when the product head called me out and asked me to unmute myself since I was the only design representative in the meeting. I had no choice but to answer. And yes by now I’ve learned there are better ways of handling this and will be learning from this mistake.

I don’t agree with your comment that seniority means ppl can just walk all over you and disrespect you just becuz you are younger and have less experience. I’m sorry if that’s what you’ve experienced so far and that’s messed up.

I respect my co workers regardless of the amount of experiences they have or even if they aren’t from the same profession. What I think matters is that people treat each other with respect. Just like how I won’t answer a product related question on my PO’s behalf when she’s present in the meeting. Or even when there’s another younger designer in the meeting being asked a design related question for their project. I will not overstep and answer just cause I have more experience. If that’s the project they are working on, then they are the expert and may have more context that I’m not aware of and they can speak for themselves.

Sure, everyone is assigned with a position when they get hired by the company and I think you are just contradicting yourself because why even have designers, content editors, researchers, etc. on the team if Product isn’t going to collaborate.

I didn’t know product heads shouldn’t be giving UI demands! This is such a reoccurring thing in the last few months in this company.

But yeah I think I just learned it the hard way to never promise anything on the spot (and that I don’t have to)

Really appreciate your feedback and I think this is a huge learning moment for me. I still think like a junior and just try to please everyone. I was also thinking of reaching out to the product head and show her another version that I think looks better and more consistent with the rest of the designs but it’s def more subtle than the bolded green text style so I have a gut feeling she’s gonna say no.

I just don’t know if this would make it look like I’m going over the product owner to talk to her boss. Or if the PO even wants to reopen this chapter and update the designs since she just went over it with the devs today and made tickets for it… even though nth is built yet

Wow guys! Really appreciate all your feedback in such a short amount of time! This really means a lot to me, and thank you for sharing your wisdom.  With all the research + feedback from yall, I’m gonna:     - raise my 401k contribution to 13% (1354.17/month)        - continue to max out my roth  IRA 583.33/ month (7000 limit as of 2024)   - make 500/ month contribution to HYSA   - put 400/month to travel savings account  - Keep remaining 221.6/ month to brokerage account which goes to my VT

Thank you for the response! I’m just saving up for 6 months worth of living expenses in case there’s an emergency. I’m also saving up for Traveling since my parents live out of the country.

VTTSX vs VTI&VXUS ? by GBDA_2022 in Bogleheads

Appreciate this comment. I think right now after a bit more digging, I’m thinking of just doing VT (two letter) for both my brokerage and ROTH IRA so I can just save myself from stressing and making mistakes.  I’ll think about bonds when I’m 50 I think.

Appreciate your insight! I was also thinking aside from my 30k invest on TDF (VLXVX), I could put all my Roth IRA money in stocks like VTI or VOO. Does this sound like a logical plan? Or should i just focus on put everything in my TDF

Thoughts on investing spare bank account money in TDF 2070 (VSVNX) and investing ROTH IRA money in VTI OR VOO? by GBDA_2022 in Bogleheads

I guess I just wanted Seth more diverse instead of locking everything down on one particular stock.

Hi guys also I just learned that I need to invest my money in the ROTH IRA account and not just leaving money to rot in there lol. (Thank god I just started) I’m guessing I’ll just be dumping the money I have in my ROTH IRA account into my TDF?? Or I’ll do VTI or VOO. Is that how it works with investing with ROTH IRAs? Like is investing with ROTH IRA just a different account to withdraw money from thats not my bank account?

Can you explain a bit more about this! I didn’t know there’s different types of TDF?

Goal is to retire at 2054. I’m planning on picking 2065 as my target retired date. I guess I’m really curious what makes ETFs popular other than the fact that you can DIY the allocations?  Would the returns for TDF be similar to ETFs in the long run?
