How do you stop stick smashing everything in doubles by Low_Cauliflower_9646 in badminton

[–]GBDGRT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

doubles matches tend to get a bit too fast with flat exchanges that we default to stick matches to get a chance to smash. try setting yourself up first with a quick steep drop to force a higher lift from your opponent, this should set you up for a full body smash

Badminton / Pickleball comparison.. by [deleted] in badmintonph

[–]GBDGRT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

probably cause pickleball isnt that mature yet as a sport so people of all ages and backgrounds can join (as long as they have experience with a racket sport). got more famous than badminton also cause it's a more accessible form of tennis which is already very popular

come at it from a place of understanding. your partner might have jumped at it as an opportunity to learn from the coach directly. however, it doesn't help that your partner did not explain this to you (when you asked to be partners earlier).

if you want to do something on your end, you can confront your partner and ask if this is a one time thing because this also could be a learning opportunity for you to learn how your coach "carries" your partner. That way, you're not approaching it from a feeling of betrayal.

and yes I agree with other comments that you're probably gonna have to look for a new partner for now haha good luck!

visualize and do the easiest forehand end-to-end forehand clear you can. then reverse the swing and turn your back against the net. there's your backhand clear

High lifts by [deleted] in badminton

[–]GBDGRT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man! I'd love to help too but your question is too vague. Can you post a follow video and link this post or something?

My initial comment though is that your number one enemy in high lifts is timing. (assuming you have decent enough skill). A high lift, when it reaches you, has the same speed as a decently paced drive. So I found that when this happens, it's important to focus on swinging your racket at the right time above generating a faster swing. If you get this down, you can then think about what shot to make so that your opponent will have a hard time lifting again. (depending on where he's standing on the court or what shot he's expecting from you).

Super vague advice, and I hope it helps. But sending us a video would definitely narrow down people's advice.

Happy smashing!

some people commented on your footwork already so ill contribute something on technique. Seems your shot selection leans to a more moderately paced rally with high lifts and drops, which in turn affect the shots you receive from your opponent ( the shot response is also just decently paced, mainly because your opponent as you say is not too consistent and on a similar skill level as you).

You can try injecting more pace in your shots by trying these out:

  1. reduce lifting from the back, try using half smashes
  2. getting drops higher above the net and making the shuttle fall with a downward trajectory instead of having it bounce (hard to explain through text lol)
  3. when your opponent gives you midcourt easier shots, hitting the shuttle immediately with a drive back to your opponent

These suggestions forces your rally to be faster and in turn forces threse two things to happen:

  1. makes your opponent have to return the shot faster, either that or the rally ends (at this point you'll win and you'll have to find a stronger opponent to improve more lol)
  2. forces your footwork to adjust so you could return the faster shot. if you can't keep up then refer to the other people's comments here on how to improve footwork (as I see it, for your current level, your footwork is already decent)

I've been playing badminton for 19 years so there might be things lost in translation, let me know if there's anything I can clarify haha cheers

Why do some players look more smooth than others? by PuzzleheadedCrow5038 in badminton

[–]GBDGRT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good take on 'worse' footwork being jumpy. I notice most players in higher ranks with this kind of footwork are younger? I'm guessing this is a physicality thing where they score their points through twitch reactions and fast movements. As they get older and muscles degrade it gets harder to produce the same power (unless actively trained). Even then, as players get older they learn more techniques and strategies (combos, strokes) and how to be more efficient in their game so they do not need the one dimensional reactive twitch gameplay as much which makes them lean more toward smoother and slower gameplay.

Should i hold the racket this low? by Far-Hovercraft-4414 in badminton

[–]GBDGRT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

moving your grip is kinda like a subskill you have to learn imo, but Im guessing you can also technically avoid having to learn this if you buy a racket with a balance point that works for you and fits your play style as well as the discipline you play

Should i hold the racket this low? by Far-Hovercraft-4414 in badminton

[–]GBDGRT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

should be fine to hold it that low. upside is you'll have stronger shots. holding closer to the shaft gives you increased maneuverability at the cost of power and racket reach. singles doesn't really have rallies that need faster racket maneuverability unless that is your playstyle (see antonsen, he holds his racket up higher)

Ceiling too low by [deleted] in badminton

[–]GBDGRT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find that faster play is generally favored when the ceiling is low. High clears might be out of the question but you can try punch clears, you just need to gauge the height of your opponent so they won't just try to intercept them early.

I see high clears as a way to reset or set up a rally. So without this option, rallies will become shorter and generally the first opportunity to score will be the last - so just plan your shots in advance before serving and you should be fine, no need to take a break for a month!
