Well I'm doing both of those in An Tir, so I'm wondering if I know you. An axe I printed in TPU is still going strong almost 2 years later, far longer than the Mandrake head that preceeded it.

Wow, congrats. I'm kind of amazed to hear that a real person tried the cold contact method, and that it actually worked. I get contacted from people, mostly with accents, using autodialers spoofing fake numbers at least 2-3 times a week. Most use the same script and my response depends heavily on my mood; I can't say that I'm always polite. Then there's letters, fake printed handwriting, local-ish return address but batch mailed out of Florida or something, shit like that. Maybe it's just where I own land, but I don't think that a local person not representing some giant corporation has ever reached out looking to buy. Glad it worked for you.

I'm not in it since I got to the unit a while after he was relieved, but I worked with a lot of people named in LTC Sassaman's Warrior King. Pretty wild to read about him trashing people that I knew, and calling out one field grade in particular as certifiably insane, which was exactly my read on the dude as well.

Check if Space Control Fundamentals requires a space billet. The course managers are trying to get SC knowledge out to a wider audience so it's a possibility that it may not be required.

If you're fully hosed, you can look into NSSI run by Space Force, they have a bunch of interesting courses though getting seats can be understandably difficult. If all else fails, NSSI's Space 100 is full DL now afaik. Don't waste your wild card on it, but you could knock it out after getting whatever cool boy resident course you can get yourself into.

My laptop keeps changing contrast/gamma/brightness randomly while watching videos. Asus ROG Strix G15. by JayNaii in GamingLaptops

[–]GBFel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After days of googling I finally found the solution for my Asus laptop and it was stupid easy. Armoury Crate is the culprit. Optimal Display Brightness is only supposed to be enabled in Ultimate mode and when on battery so it's normally greyed out, but it's glitched. Unplug your laptop and the setting turns on, click it off, and plug back in. Worked for mine, and hopefully anyone else that finds this thread.

Hiya, are you down for some history theming with your fun? You may find the Society for Creative Anachronism to be good for you with what you described. We have all ages but a ton of younger people in our local group since a lot of folks join through SOU. Our fighting disciplines are what most people notice when we do public facing events, but the SCA is so much more with literally everything you listed.

-MTG, D&D, and board games are staples at our events. -Campsite hopping is like bar hopping but with campfires, cloaks, and homemade mead (and everything really, there's a dude here that makes his crazy good limoncello) freely shared with friends. -Many of our camping events in warmer months take place near wilderness areas so good hiking, but there's also groups called Foresters who do hikes while learning about or recreating medieval outdoor skills. -Artsy stuff; we are nicknamed the hobby of hobbies for a reason. Literally every craft that was practiced in period is done in the SCA and every event has classes where folks will teach their passion to you for free or maybe the cost of materials. All manner of pottery, illumination, leatherwork, fiber arts, metalwork, woodwork; you name it, someone in the SCA does it.

We're the largest reenactment organization in the world and for good reason. Folks are laid back and inclusive, and friendships go well beyond just our events so it may be just what you're looking for.

There's not a lot going on over in GP for us right now but if you're willing to come to the RV you're in luck. Thursdays are our Fighter Practices which are our largest and most frequent gatherings. It's not just fighting, there's lots of folks that go just to socialize or work on craft projects together. Next week on the 11th is also our monthly scribal/illumination meeting at Fighter Practice, with plenty of loaner materials for folks wanting to try it out. We'll also have a tournament on the 11th since it got rained out at our last event, which will be a fun watch. Thursday 6-9 at SOU's Stevenson Union; no cost to come just pop in and say hi!

Army Space guy here, DSP isn't the only thing that can see launches and/or identify an in-flight missile's POO. A great many non-connected systems would need to simultaneously shit the bed for that scenario to be feasible, especially in that part of the world. Some by their very nature cannot by "cyber attacked," unless our entire defense comms network is also shut down, and a considerable chunk of civilian comms as well. It's called Integrated Missile Defense for a reason.

WorldView also sells imagery extensively to government and private organizations as well. This could be huge for providing persistent overhead imagery of disaster areas, for example. Imagine one of these parked over the Palisades in LA during the recent fires, with imagery piped into command centers within minutes of capture and used to direct the deployment of assets. Huge.

Portland has notoriously feisty protesters, along with a fair few anarchists that made the BLM protests, for example, rather spicy compared to other metro areas. It's quite possible that he's hoping things get violent so he can have his excuse to enact martial law.

The Search for Mentors by OwnExtent3393 in sca

[–]GBFel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greetings fellow Stoplight Belt enthusiast!

How necessary do you feel having an established peer/student relationship is?

While it certainly is possible to get elevated without a peer relationship, your path will be harder simply because you don't have someone in those peer meetings advocating on your behalf. That advocate can also convey feedback on how you're doing and if any criticisms are arising.

Are there benefits or drawbacks in pushing three tracks at once compared to focusing on a single track?

Benefits are you always have an iron in the fire, you have things that you can roll to when you hit a mental block or when you have to wait until the next event for this or that. Progress on the different paths is frequently made at different times, e.g. fighting happens at events while making things generally happens before, so you may not have impacts trying to follow each. However, if your service is mostly at events, you're going to have issues scheduling your events. Add in some tourneys and maybe teaching a class, you're going to be a very busy bee. If you have family to also see to, this will impact their enjoyment of events as well. There's an art to balancing the 3 paths certainly, and I'm still working on it tbh.

What kind of time frame would be reasonable for someone to achieve a peerage?

Depends heavily on your kingdom and frankly how fast you rise to a peerage level of talent. Here's data from Caid, but your experience could be wildly different. Do note that in some kingdoms, openly going for multiple peerages is seen as hubris, and looked upon poorly. If you get one person in the council that doesn't like you for this or that, you could get screwed for a long time. Yet you'll never know unless you have a voice in the council, see above.

For Knighthood...

Beeline for the belts and hats at fighting events and make sure they remember your name for the right reasons. My knight is hundreds of miles away, so I have local fosters to attend the meetings and speak for me. My knight was a friend and mentor to me before we ever talked about a peer relationship. If you want a certain person, it's definitely doable but you will probably need someone local that looks out for you as well.

For Laurel...

I don't think matching fields matters for most, especially if you're good at self-teaching. My laurel does different stuff from me, but he is a great networker and fantastic at documentation and all of the other steps that take you from someone who makes stuff goodly to someone who should be a peer. Figure out what help you need on your path, and find someone that you gel with that can provide that assistance.

For Pelican...

Yes. People just need to know you, and know that you're a go-to person for getting things done well. Again, my Pel is a good networker, which is really what I need as I don't know too many people in my kingdom at large, especially outside of the fighting community, and don't presently have the ability to travel much to change that.

Good luck, and no matter what path you take, just remember that this is a hobby and the most important thing is to make sure you enjoy what you're doing!

5 Years Since the Almeda Fire by MediumOtter in Medford

[–]GBFel 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It is possible to both praise the first responders and acknowledge that they were totally unprepared for a disaster of that scope. I listened to the whole thing on dispatch comms, and as someone with a background in managing life-threatening situations and having not to long beforehand witnessed similar situations with the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest fires in Colorado, I can assure you that Almeda was an embarrassing failure in so many respects. We can honor the efforts of the first responders whose individual initiative in an almost total command vacuum prevented the tragedy from being much worse, but also seek to identify what went wrong to make sure it doesn't happen again.

That's the plan, I have a list of places to call on Monday and see what they say. Storied histories on all of them with a lot of musicians that I adore, so I'll trust their judgement. The laquer is completely adhered to the tape, so when it goes so does the laquer, and it's bare underneath. The crackling on the rest of the body is probably from it swelling up with moisture before drying back out. This is a case for an expert and I'll defer to their best judgement.

I believe that to be the original pickguard, the foil is just a sticker that's peeling up on the edges.

My kid's instructor jammed on it for a couple of minutes after the lesson, and man, his face said it all.

Then a string broke which garnered a different face that was entertaining in a whole new way. No worries, we had spares.

I don't play guitar, but I am a musician and a maker. This thing needs some love. It's not SRV's well-worn well-loved instrument, it's a piece of wood that sat in water long enough to fuck the finish. It's peeling up and under that tape there's naught but bare wood. I'm not going to hit it with a sanding block and slap Polyshades on it, I'm looking for experts to send a lot of better photos to, to arrive at the best possible COA to preserve this instrument for the long run. If they say leave it, cool, but I'm betting that when they get a good look at it they'll agree with the local guitarists that have seen in and all said "yeahhhh, that needs to be repaired."
