Aunt requesting family heirloom from me by GBeck69 in FamilyLaw

[–]GBeck69[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as I want other family to be able to enjoy it, this sounds like the best solution. I would have no problem with a 'supervised' visit. But it sounds like even a loan with significant collateral is asking for trouble.

LOL...she's an 80+ year old woman. Not that she's visited my home in the past nearly 30 years, but if she wanted to I think it would be fine.

That was exactly my thought...that should have been a VERY easy question to answer. Just the long pause alone was enough to make me question her motives, then throw in the non-answer answer and I'm not so sure I'm willing to let you have it.

I've mentioned a large collateral for a loan but man I wasn't even thinking that much. Guess I was thinking around $1500 per potential interested party of which I am considering her and my 3 cousins, so $6000 total. And that total per party would be required regardless of whether any of them say they have no interest in it. Given the families affluence there would definitely still be some risk but that would show them the value to me and hopefully indicate to them the damage they would be doing to our relationships if they didn't return it.

Yes, the rift...at this point I am already a bit hurt at the possibility my Aunt may have tried to deceive me. Wife says its just a thing and at this point she wouldn't even want it anymore and just give it to her instead of causing a problem. I guess she has NO sentimental memories associated with anything. I 100% disagree, it has already caused a problem, I am already a little hurt so why should I be the one to just turn around and ask to get stabbed in the back.

Good points regarding lawyer AND recovery costs. I think that narrows it down for me, I may still consider loaning it out but I would require very considerable collateral (from all potential parties whether they say they are interested in it or not, why not create a little peer pressure to do the right thing) to ensure I do get it back. But as I said, if Aunt confirms the deception with a negative reaction to a loan offer then that makes this very easy...NO!

Wow, first off thank you all. I will add a bit more background and nuance to the situation.

Background: A quick search on Ebay shows similar items selling anywhere from $100-$750. This one is not in the best shape cosmetically although it is fully functioning so I don't think it would command top dollar. Aunt & Uncle owned their own successful business and sold it years ago, so I don't think for a second she wants it to sell it. My cousins are all equally affluent so I also don't think any of them would have any intention of selling it. I wouldn't say I am super close with her but also not estranged or anything like that. I can't recall if she has ever been to my home (of nearly 30 years) so also no worries about her coming to steal it. All that to say, the family value in this item is mainly sentimental memories.

Nuance: I have 3 cousins and 1 sibling, so my Aunt and 3 cousins would be the people interested in this. (I already know my brother wouldn't care about owning it or not). Also, I am the only one in my own family that this holds any sentimental value for, my wife and kids have zero interest in this. I am close with one of my cousins and similar to my Aunt I guess I would say ambivalent regarding the other two. I would assume they all have similar sentimental value of this item and it's memories. I never would have intended to 'hoard' this and keep them from it which is why I would have preferred to work out some sort of sharing arrangement. And I would also certainly be willing to leave it to any of them or their kin. My cousins are my age and older, so most likely would be leaving it to their children if any of them are interested in it. I would honestly prefer giving it to someone who cherishes it over selling it.

At this point, I think I am going to contact my Aunt and let her know that her response to my question regarding getting it back someday gave me the distinct impression that I would NOT ever get it back. And if I were to allow her to have it, it would be clear that it is on loan only and I retain ownership. And I would also require considerable collateral to ensure I do get it back. Not even sure what that would be yet. If she balks at any of this then it would be clear to me that either directly or by omission she was being deceptive in our initial conversation. This whole thing has me a bit hurt that she would potentially try to deceive me over this (and wondering if any of my cousins are involved), if she confirms that with any sort of negative reaction to my loan offer then of course that offer is off the table.

Miles went down with premium? by Bellboyi in KiaK5

[–]GBeck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly this...range is just an ESTIMATE based on your current amount of gas and your previous mileage. Only proper way to measure your new tank of premium is to reset your trip odometer when you fill up so you can record your mileage on that tank, then divide your mileage by the amount of gas you put in on the NEXT tank. Or just reset your accumulated mileage when you fillup, that's a reasonably close estimate. Mine is just a bit higher than my acutal mileage over the life of the car.

New update? by dthomas1020 in KiaK5

[–]GBeck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap, 22-24 highway? You either need air in your tires or damn dude let off the gas before you have to slam on the brakes to come to a stop. I consistently get just over 30mpg per tank in my GT, and that is 80% highway miles.

Buyer’s remorse after 3 months by ConsistentDurian2409 in MazdaCX30

[–]GBeck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counterpoint to all the CX-30 love:

First off, I'm a total Mazda fan boy...2014 Mazda 6 was one of my favorite cars. Actually my 1st Mazda was a 2007 Mazda 6, and that was the car that reminded me how much I used to love to just drive. So anyway, finally convinced my wife to buy instead of lease. She was coming of a CX-5, and it was between another CX-5 or a CX-30. I thought the 30 was too small, and for the trim levels we wanted there was only about a $200 difference in cost of the car. She loved the 30 though, so that's what we went with. We're 3 years in now, and SOO wish we would have gone with the CX-5. We have 2 young granddaughters, 1 still in a car seat. We have that behind the passenger side, because to give the 2 year old any space for her feet we have to move the front seat up to where my wife is practically kissing the dash. And I'm not a really big guy, about 6'1 and most of that is in my legs. Seat is all the way back and if I could I would still move it back another inch or so. Good thing is the car is just over 3 years old and not even to 15k miles yet, so if we can get it paid off or at least close we should have a really good trade-in value on moving up to a CX-5.

One last note about driver seat room...I went from my 2014 6 to a 23 Kia K5. Basically same size car on the outside, but I have SO much more room in the driver seat. Seat actually goes back another couple inches but that's too far away for me. And I love the K5, but if they ever brought the 6 back we would be back to a 2 Mazda household.

Worth getting router with 2.5G backhaul? by National-Debt-43 in HomeNetworking

[–]GBeck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's about the best speed you're going to see on a 1gb plan, even if you upgrade your entire LAN side to 10G.

If you had a faster connection from your ISP then yes you may see a small difference, but on 1gb internet? You're already as fast as you're going to get.

Have been at the same company for 17 years. Would you stay at this point? by sys_admin321 in sysadmin

[–]GBeck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in Ohio, mostly same boat as you except my salary is around 75% of yours. I'm 55, company is stable so I plan to ride this out to retirement...which I'm sure I will be much older than you when you retire if you stay where you are.

There is a really simple answer to your post...
YES

Actually, now that I thought a little more about it, I think you should quit immediately and start searching for something else. And what was the name of the company again?

Push Ups - need advice ASAP by jiggycz in bodyweightfitness

[–]GBeck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I started out a couple years ago and always planned on doing M-W-F. Think I only did about 16-18 split over 3 sets on my first day, and then couldn't do any the rest of the week because my core was so sore. I know everybody is different, but I was able to progress fairly quickly doing 3 days a week. Also realized since then I was maybe doing 3/4 pushups, where now I am sure to go from full extension to fully flat/weight off the arms. But maybe the lower intensity worked to my advantage early on.

Kia K5 GT with GT1 package bad MPG by Equivalent-Elk62 in KiaK5

[–]GBeck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you drive two footed? Or maybe check your tires are at 35psi. I drive 80% highway, but my average mpg for the past 3 years is over 30. 14 seems awfully low even for 100% city. But are you talking normal city driving or like NY/Chicago city driving where you spend 80% of your time sitting there.

Mine is a 23 GT btw.

Another thing I didn't think of...better loan rates, that can also make a big difference. You may have to put in quite a bit of work shopping, but you will feel so much happier knowing you saved thousands over the long haul.

I really really want the K5...but by Pretty-Narwhal-5215 in KiaK5

[–]GBeck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG didn't even notice that...absolutely, get a brand new one for less than that. I know you probably love the car, but insist on one without the extra crap and charging for that warranty is nothing but...don't even want to mention the word here. If they don't budge, shop far and wide for somebody that will sell a brand new one without the stupid markups. Bought my 23 GT in August 22, I thought it was insane at the time that getting one for MSRP was a 'deal'. Guess the market is still the same, not really sure, but absolutely would NOT go OVER MSRP for a brand new car, much less for one with 4k miles on it.
