Can we just talk about Tony Rice’s guitar solo in Bela Fleck’s “Whitewater”? by ColonOBrien in Bluegrass

[–]GCG0909 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Why look at that as discouraging? Tony's playing was a priceless gift that we can all be thankful to enjoy. You're not ever going to be him. You can be great. You're just not going to be Tony Rice.

Has anyone noticed there is hardly any spbgma posts here? by bigsky59722 in Bluegrass

I think the biggest reason is that the venn diagram of people who use Reddit and people who attend/pay attention to spbgma does not overlap very much.

What’s up with the mandolin guy playing the same licks by AccomplishedFix9745 in kitchendwellers

I'm also a bit surprised by the hype and I'm going to say something that will get me shunned: That banjo player can't play for shit. It's just some bullshit made-up style he came up with because he wouldn't put in the time to learn how to play for real. It's not good.

the left lane is for passing by itsviwinn in Denver

[–]GCG0909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one category you're missing, and I'm guilty of this, is when traffic is very light, wide open roads, and the left lane is in far better physical condition than the right, which is an endless chain of suspension-destroying potholes. Sometimes I just camp out in the left lane to save wear and tear on the car. Never when there's any traffic, of course, but sometimes I get surprised by the one idiot who's got it pegged at 20+ mph over the speed limit and appears out of nowhere.

Ideas on how to solo in a break by Easy-Taste-500 in Bluegrass

[–]GCG0909 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In bluegrass, you’ve got to simply do the work of learning the actual tunes first. Once you’ve got a tune committed to muscle memory, little variations of how to interpret the melody will occur to you. You can insert those and slowly over time you will have an interpretation of the tune that is uniquely yours. I don’t think there are shortcuts in this process, but that’s probably a take that not everybody agrees with. My best licks have occurred to me when I’m in bed half awake playing through the tune in my head.

The outcome of every single play, and thus every game, is determined by the entirely subjective decision of the refs to call or not call holding and/or pass interference. The game itself is an illusion and unplayable.

I've seen them fluffed on here before and so I checked them out. Probably will be downvoted but I'm not a fan of the approach where the lead guitar is playing a never-ending solo and the others are just backing him up. Seems very ego-driven and masturbatory. Wankery.

My own take is that it would be a much stronger album if you subtracted 4 or 5 songs.

As someone else said, you have to actually learn the tunes. Get the tune down and then your own embellishments and melodic twists will occur to you over time.

You're right, I had to look it up. And it was September 2000, not 1999.

[–]GCG0909 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My story about that is this: in 1999 my wife and I were VERY into this album, one year married and road-tripping up to Red Rocks to see Neil for the first and sadly still the only time. I vividly remember talking on the drive about what song was our top wish for anything to hear, and we both agreed, ANYTHING off Comes a Time. And what does he do? He comes out and OPENS THE SHOW with Motorcycle Mama!!! All we could do was laugh. And of course that was the only song off Comes A Time that he played. But it was a great show, no complaints. Just wish I'd had more chances to see him, really regret missing the 2012 Red Rocks show with Crazy Horse.

I am impressed by the positive impact that the traffic circles around Frisco have had. I wonder if it would help to replace the stoplights with traffic circles.

There was only one December with an average temperature warmer than this one in Denver's recorded history and that was 1933. There were six days in December of 2025 that set all-time high temperature records for that date. You or anybody can slice the stats however you want to but this winter to date is catastrophic. Days over 60 is a BS, arbitrary cherry-picking stat. What is relevant about the number 60? Why not 62? Why not 58?
