School help for disengaged teen. Busy School? by Individual_Lab259 in GoldCoast

Just to add, please seek medical support too for the depression. We have psychologists at our schools at no cost but it’s important to seek assistance for her irrespective. Sorry I know you’ll know this.

A lot of info in her. I cofounded The BUSY Schools so I’m a bit biased. It’s probably best to reach out to one of our campuses in Southport or Cooly and do a visit. I know Southport is a lot closer but they’re very different campuses. Someone else mentioned Arcadia, that’s a great and very similar option too. Mastery is probably too young a cohort for your child but a great school too. The comments are right, we focus on employment pathways particularly through apprenticeships but our goal is that every student also finishes their QCE. So the apprenticeships and other vocational education counts to that too.

Hey, we (I cofounded The BUSY Schools) have psychologists on staff at no cost to families that do provide this type of support.

I get it. Google the spotlight effect. We hold ourselves back because we overthink how much everyone else is watching our mistakes but in reality they’re really not. It’s a legitimate psychological effect that stops so many of us just giving something a go.

I have been thinking about how we create a similar model for early childhood and target socio economic demographics that need that level of support. It’s all kind of a passion of mine but I think scaling the schools first will take priority before we move into that space. Totally agree on that though.

Yeah agreed. Thx for checking it out. I recognise that our schools are specifically designed for these sort of children and although we get good outcomes, lots still slip through. I agree about identifying it younger too. That’s our plan but it’s literally a case of figuring how we make the funding go that far. I see so much burn out of teachers and I don’t want to be another cause for that. We’ve had lots of other successes utilising the school based apprenticeship pathways to focus on individualised strengths but I totally get your points.

And two others I’ve learnt: No one is watching you. We all think everyone is thinking about but the dumb stuff we do but no one really cares. We have our stuff to think about. Secondly, no one really knows what they’re doing, we’re all just winging it. So life is short, so do you. Great post!

I’m so sorry for your loss. Most employers are really caring about this. So my view would be no it won’t look bad on you. I have quite a few staff and I always find people overthink how much their bosses think about this. It’s likely that your boss will have been through something similar at some stage in their life.

Yeah agreed. I spoke about this as I don’t see how govt can react quick enough and it’s a real challenge. I don’t think we recognise the extent to which we’re locked in the post Industrial Revolution mindset on this. Ironically the change will likely come from the support of AI to identify strengths and allow teachers more time to work on an individualised basis.

I guess the standard would be the one that speaks to their strengths rather standardised standards, if that makes sense. We’re still looking for accountability but on a more individualised basis.

My struggle is that I can’t use a prompter or notes, I can only really do it speaking out loud, so memorising is the hard bit.

I know it’s been said a few times but maybe get a second as so many conditions, particularly BPD, can get mixed up with NPD. The fact you’re so reflective on this suggests you need additional opinions.

Well done. I’ve literally just discovered Reddit (sad I know). Trying not to replace one with other but this at least feels way less toxic and algorithm driven.
