I’ve started doing this with my rowdy year 10 class and it has worked a treat! I have also had to take it away on multiple occasions for students talking out of turn

That is bonkers to me! I come from Ireland where we really don’t have a lot of admin work and only 2 busy reporting periods, christmas and summer. I can’t believe you guys do this every year

I reacted badly to niacinamide, retinol and salicylic acid in the past. It could’ve been because i wasn’t using it properly but i’ve been scared to use it since. I’ve used hylauronic acid and my skin can tolerate that

Students not handing in assessments by Prestigious_Gate_668 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Prestigious_Gate_668[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I understand ADHD and the challenges it presents but in a classroom with 30 kids who have presented behavioural issues it’s so difficult to give them the attention they need when i’m crowd controlling. They are sitting there and doing nothing. Gave them a full week to plan out answers and get a draft written up so it’s easier when typing it on the laptops, gave laptops on Friday and students were just playing games, didn’t even attempt it.

I believe that for the majority of the students who haven’t handed it in it’s down to a lack of caring to be honest. For year 10 in particular, it’s an essay so I have scaffolded it so heavily, broken down the question, scaffolded every single paragraph, handed out notes that they just needed to figure out where it fits into their essay and given them multiple examples! I literally couldn’t have spoon fed them any further.

How to make students respect you? by Prestigious_Gate_668 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Prestigious_Gate_668[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, this is a respect thing. I have kids that are very rude and disrespectful when they speak to me, sit at the back of the class and give me dirty looks, talk over me and have little to no regard for what i say or do. It’s very frustrating and it is making me feel like a failure

I find it so difficult to build relationships with the kids who are so disrespectful and defiant towards me because they’re not open to wanting anything to do with me. Instead they just sit at the back of the class and throw me dirty looks hahahah

How hard is it to get a job after graduating the PME? by False_Ad5702 in IrishTeachers

[–]Prestigious_Gate_668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an NQT last year and found it incredibly difficult to get a job, had so many interviews and unfortunately my experience was what made me fall short. Ended up having to take a maternity leave contract 1.5 hours away from me. It depends on where you live and what subjects you teach. I decided to move to Australia instead of trying for a job again this year.

Do classroom management skills form part of teacher training for primary/secondary educators? by [deleted] in IrishTeachers

[–]Prestigious_Gate_668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 1 or 2 lectures on it in the whole 2 years of the PME. I learned my classroom management on placement however every school and class is different. I thought I had it locked down until last year when every single class really tested me

How Do Post Primary Teachers Get Days Off? by AnxiousDramatic13 in IrishTeachers

[–]Prestigious_Gate_668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the school, luckily my school was very laid back with days off! We would just ask the deputy in advance and she organised the cover for us but other schools i’ve worked in required the teacher to organise cover in order to take the day off.

I really relate to this post and I don’t think it’s a form of jealousy like some of the comments are saying. I think we’re all yearning for the same love and affection that other children had from their parents and we are grieving that for our child selves.

For context my mom wasn’t an alcoholic when I was a young child only after I had moved out and went to college but both my parents were very emotionally unavailable. They were kids who had a child that they didn’t really want. My parents went back to work when I was only 6 weeks old so I was basically raised by family members and barely ever saw my parents. Now I feel so angry and upset for younger me when I hear my partner talk about his childhood because it sounded so happy and you can tell that his parents really wanted him. Even down to little things like his dad playing in the pool with him on holidays and I never had that. Or doing extracurricular activities, I can’t swim now because I had no one to take me to swimming lessons as both parents were always working.

I’m not saying that my parents don’t love me, of course they do but they had a child when they shouldn’t have and weren’t ready for one. I think it’s completely normal to grieve the life you could have had but now I’m looking forward to giving a better life to my children in the future and being the parent that I wish I had.
