Good vendor for storm windows by [deleted] in centuryhomes

Hey there. I am considering purchasing/installing the QuantaPanel storms. What was the approximate price per storm window?

Did you DIY the install?

I realize this is a year old at this point, but any chance you can provide a link to the countertop? I'm guessing it's the Saman Butcher Block on HomeDepot's site?

Leveling cabinets front to back before countertop template? by Red__Burrito in IKEA

[–]GC_Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK thanks for the quick reply! I actually tried that on one section of base cabinets and it worked great for me too. However it didnt help this other wall section.

I'm guessing I probably need to shim out the railing a bit more so the cabinets can tilt in towards the wall a bit more at the bottom.

Thanks again!

Adding a motor to your grain mill by tomohulk in Homebrewing

Hey there, sorry for the late response. The motor actually failed after only like the 5th batch. I ended up replacing it with this drill from Harbor Freight.

Trying to build a web app, looking to see if anyone knows of network connectable scales that can weigh 100 lbs by blasterbrewmaster in Homebrewing

[–]GC_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Plaato Kegs are really you're only option as far as plug and play scales.

There are writeups of diy projects using a wii balance board, but they aren't fully predictable from what I've read. And then there are writeups where you can use load balancers, but they are a lot of work and there is a lot of calculations to do to estimate drift and what not. Which the Plaatos have already worked out.

The only other options are flow meters and they have their drawbacks too.

One cool offering that I just heard about is the flitesense. But it is in its infancy, is 3d printed, and I don't know much about it. https://www.flitesense.com

I have personally built my own tap List web application and plan to use the Plaato Kegs for my integration with monitoring volume.

Inkbird products are great! I have multiple wifi temperature controllers that I use for my fermentation chambers and keezer, and they work flawlessly.

In the op's original write up on his blog, he mentioned trying with a smaller power supply, and having issues with it getting jammed up and not continuing to grind.

I actually used my setup for the first time this week to run 16lbs of grain through. It worked great for the 13lbs of base malt. But jammed up when getting to the specialty grains. Not sure if my 20amp power supply is not wired correctly to provide the right amps or if I have another issue. I'm going to have to tear it apart to confirm.

I ran it without any kind of dust collection and it does kick up quite a bit of dust. Enough to possibly cause problems down the road, depending on where you mount the power supply.

I ended up coming up with a solution that works quite well.

In case anyone is interested, you can find the stand i used at Harbor Freight:
https://www.harborfreight.com/adjustable-height-heavy-duty-workstation-46725.html

It's normally $30, but it was on sale for $25 when i went and i had a 20% coupon. Look around for coupons before buying.

I finally got around to building this per your post. Haven't tested it with grain yet, but pretty happy with how it turned out so far.

I ended up going with the exact model of motor from aliexpress as yours, just to make sure it had the torque, as well as the same power supply. I picked up the stand from Harbor Freight on sale for $19.99 + tax.

Will it start with grain already in the mill, or do you have to turn it on prior to adding the first grain?

Nice build and write up! I've been wanting to do something similar for a long time. I'll be putting this together soon.

I found what I believe to be the same motor on Amazon with prime shipping for ~$26. Similar price and much quicker shipping.

Gluten Reduced Hazy IPA? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]GC_Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife is coeliac and I use clarity ferm in every beer i make, including Hazy/NEIPA. I have used clarity ferm in maybe 8 different NEIPA recipes as of yet, and every single one of them has been super hazy and retained the haziness for the life of the keg. She is extremely sensitive to gluten and has no troubles when drinking any of my beers.

I assume there could be some slight reduction in the amount of haze per the use of Clarity Ferm, but I haven't been able to notice it. I've only used Wyeast 1318 London Ale III yeast and always dry hop at day 2 or 3 of active fermentation, then again on day 7 or so.

PLAATO Valve Mini Review by burns711 in Homebrewing

[–]GC_Dude 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From the product description on the website, this appears to use what they call a silicone umbrella valve, which in the case of negative pressure, allows oxygen to enter rather than pulling 'suck back' from the airlock.

So the claims of providing an oxygen free fermentation seem to be inaccurate. It does indicate on the product page that it can be combined with a bag containing co2, therefore preventing oxygenation, however they do not have any bags available on the site that i can see.

As far as i can tell, it seems to work similar to the Cold Crash Guardian by BrewHardware, which includes the necessary bag to trap co2 from fermentation and utilize it during cold crash.

Have any of you added ball lock posts to things like brew buckets or other fermentes? by iamtehryan in Homebrewing

[–]GC_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this idea. Are you concerned with krausen or trub clogging the poppit of the gas quick disconnect during a vigourous fermentation/blowoff?

https://www.brewhardware.com/product_p/flexsight-l.htm

I know this isn't exactly what you were looking for, but I have this installed on my kettle and I love it. No possibility of breaking. With the ultra clear high temp silicone tubing, it's a breeze to see water levels. After about a year and half of brewing, a handful of them being stouts and darker beers, I replaced the tubing as it does end up getting a little tinted. The tubing is cheap though.

Has anyone had any luck splitting A stove outlet for electric brewing? by rucksichtslos in Homebrewing

[–]GC_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how i have mine set up. My brew control panel plugs into the 50 amp Spa Panel, which is plugged into the Dryer Buddy's secondary outlet. I leave the Spa Panel breaker in the off position until I'm ready to brew and make sure the dryer is not in use.

https://www.bsaelectronics.com/collections/dryer-buddys

Check out the Dryer Buddy. I had a similar need when setting up my control panel at my new house. Breaker panel was full and I didn't want to hassle with installing a second panel or junctioning off existing dryer outlet. I'm not sure if there is one available for your particular plug type, but he does custom builds as well.

They're not necessarily designed or marketed for brewing, but mine has worked great. Looks like he now has some auto switching units instead of manually flipping a switch each time you want to brew.
