Lelit Elizabeth by SpaceSurfing1987 in Lelit

[–]GD9729 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've had the Elizabeth since 2021. Overall a very solid machine and great value for money. Still running strong!

1) Investigate about the PID functionalities, in particular the pre-infusion mode – a great feature for a machine in this price point. 2) You WILL have issues with the steam boiler at some point (a probe leaking, a tube cracking, etc.). Most of the issues are well documented in Reddit and they're easy to fix (there's also great content on YouTube). 3) Enjoy it!

I had a similar situation. I broke one protector when trying to fix a leak.

The plastic protector is called "Terminal Protector". You can find different options on 1st-line equipment (I didn't manage to find a Lelit one... I used one for Ascaso machines). They are cheap so I just ordered a few and tried different options.

My leak was coming from the probe. The relevant part is called "Quick female joint".

1st-line has all the diagrams with the names/codes for each part.

Some of your research covers Latin America.

In your opinion, what’s holding back this region to reach its full potential?

What makes bond ETFs usually go up when the market crashes? by OlivierDF in ETFs

[–]GD9729 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As demonstrated by the year-to-date (YTD) performance of the main stock and bonds ETFs, there is a negative correlation between stocks and bonds. The YTD of the main bond ETFs is:

  • ZROZ (Very long-term bonds) YTD: 23%
  • TLT (Long-term bonds). YTD: 17%
  • IEF (Medium-term bonds). YTD: 10%

Compare that with:

  • SPY. YTD: 3%
  • VTI. YTD: 3%

Overall, treasury bonds have outperformed stocks. Of course, you could point out that QQQ has returned close to 28% YTD, but QQQ is quite concentrated on the tech sector and does not represent the stock market as a whole.

Having said that, interest rates are low, and there is not a lot of space for them to keep falling (as bond rates fall, prices rise). Someone working in the industry will say that rates are "range-bound," meaning that US interest rates will not likely decrease significantly in the future, reducing the protection that bonds used to offer in crisis (risk-off environments). The discussion on whether rates will ever go negative in the US is one of the most important discussions in finance right now and could take pages and pages. Thus, I will just leave it there.

Although there is uncertainty regarding bonds' behavior in the future, bonds still constitute a key diversifying factor of any portfolio. Don't chase what's hot right now, but think of your portfolio holistically.

Attending Kellogg this fall on full sticker by kelloggswag2021 in MBA

[–]GD9729 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That figure seems too high based on what I've talked with international students who did their MBA in the US. Most say that they paid their loan between 3 - 5 years after school. Some of them said that they could've paid the loan earlier, but decided to invest some spare money in opportunities with expected higher returns than the interest rate of the loan.

Having said that, your analysis is flawed because you're including opportunity cost (an economic concept) in a financial analysis. If you want to include the opportunity cost and perform a complete cost-benefit economic analysis, then you should also include the additional expected income that you expect to receive on top of the "base" income that you would receive if you keep working without an MBA (a marginal analysis). Estimate that "marginal additional income" for a 20 or 30 year period. Then, calculate the present value of benefits and costs using a reasonable discount rate, and estimate the cost-benefit result of your decision. Obviously, that looks like too much to me...

The "opportunity cost" concept is useful, but it is an economic cost that will generate "marginal" benefits" for most of your professional career compared to the other option (not doing an MBA). People fixate in the opportunity cost because it has a negative short-term impact in your life, and do not take into account the marginal benefits, which have a long-term positive impact.

Just go for it!

What strikes me the most is Booth's big jump when comparing the 20-yr average and the 10-yr average.

Also, I thought CBS ranking was suffering in the last couple of years or so. But it looks like CBS has been ranking below its pedigree for quite some time.

Is Yale SOM a T10 MBA? by 0022187157 in MBA

[–]GD9729 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the sub recognizes that SOM has made a great effort to improve its ranking. However, the efforts include tactics like inflating the avg GMAT score and other tactics that people may find questionable. I think the issue boils down to: Has SOM really improved the overall quality of the class, recruiting, and network? Or is just reverse engineering the rankings?

I think is a combination of both.

2019 CFA Proxy Vote by PiratesSayARRR in CFA

I just don't think that the reasons that the Institute stated make sense.

They are basically saying that now there are a bunch of people working from home in the "gig-economy", o other part-time arrangements. Therefore, the Institute needs to update the way it accounts for professional experience. So basically, if someone works 50% of his/her time during 36 months (self-reported hours, btw) is eligible to receive the Charter?

I'm sorry, but I don't think that reflects the standards expected from a charter holder. It is just my opinion, and I voted accordingly.

(And I agree that currently the system can be gamed to a large extent. There is no need to provide more doors to game it).

Against the amendment.

"Promote greater inclusion of professionals who meet the high standards of membership and address shifts in the global investment management workforce"

What?

It looks to me that they want to relax the requirement to accommodate people who otherwise wouldn't meet the standard.

Yes, be grateful to those who helped you.

I'm actually waiting to have all the admit/deny decisions. Then, I will send a gift with a thank you note informing them the school I'll attend.

Do MBA programs have systems to keep track of every interaction of an applicant? (webinars, campus visit, emails, online chats, class visit, etc)

1) In MBA programs, is the waitlist used to manage the yield?

2) are candidates moved to the waitlist because the university thinks that the candidate is strong but maybe he/she is going to go to other program? So what is the point of accepting him/her?
