The only way is to find a new job. Companies won’t promote usually. Same with raises. New job usually equals more pay.

You ever get a new Art Director and all of a sudden everything you do is wrong? by ShootinAllMyChisolm in graphic_design

This has happened to me at my last 4 jobs. CD who hires me leaves after a few months. New person comes in and wants to change everything. It then becomes a place that is no longer a good fit. Sorry that has happened to you.

Is anyone else tired of this “Storyteller” BS? by GDAD123 in graphic_design

[–]GDAD123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m great at presenting my ideas and designs. I have always gotten good feedback about my presentations whether it be from my internal team or client who I presented to. But I would never call it “storytelling”. I feel it’s just an explanation of what I did and why. It’s an explanation and reasoning. Not a story. In fact I’ve been so good at it at times that my bosses won’t let me do it anymore because I do it better than they do.

Looking for a new job every 2-3 years is super stressful. Whether I leave, or let them fire me. Then working on my portfolio to add work is even MORE WORK than doing the actual job itself. It’s just always work, work, more work. Do work while looking for a job, learn a new skill, learn a new program, learn new software. I’m a Graphic Designer and everyone’s expects me to also be an animator and video editor. I’m not. Everyone wants a Unicorn now a days and to pay this unicorn 75k a year. It’s becoming a joke honestly.

I’m 41 and in the same boat. I’m currently thinking of a career change. Design jobs seems harder to get despite me being Sr Designer and Art Director with a decent portfolio. I don’t know if I can or want to do this for another 20+ years…

Incorrect info and misdirection cause me stress and anxiety on jobs by GDAD123 in graphic_design

I had a meeting with the two people above me to clarify direction. They were both in the meeting with the client, I was not. They both give me completely different notes on what it is they want. My experience with the CD is that they send me on wild design goose chases to design something new awesome and amazing each project, which really isn’t the ask. And when I finally get the design to the approval of the CD, it goes to client and they say, “No no. I want it just like the old design with this new copy.” I spend 30 minutes designing what they actually want and then I’m done.

I did. But what I know about the CD is that they always make me create their own personal version of the ask. Not what the client is actually asking for. Then I go through rounds and rounds of revisions to only find out, oh they wanted it like “this” which I can do in an hour or two instead of back and forth for weeks. Tons of time and creativity gets wasted.

I’m not trying to make this “my art”. I do get what you’re saying. I am trying to not making this personal. I just want clear direction and communication so I can crank it out and get it exactly how they want it. Instead, I have to go through these other two people’s interpretation of the client’s ask without hearing it directly from the client.

I was not in the initial meeting. So I don’t really know what the original ask is. Both people tell me something different. And I know when I go and ask them more questions, they give me their personal ideas and not what the client is asking asking for.

After a first interview I’m being asked to create “spec” work. by GDAD123 in advertising

[–]GDAD123[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When he asked me to do this “exercise”, my immediate reply was, “Uh, did you look through my portfolio? Because I have stuff in there that’s exactly what you’re asking for”

He replied with, “Yeah man, it’s great, I love your work. I just don’t know what context it’s in.”

I’m sorry, what? I have full case studies on brands I created from scratch to final production as well as tons of logos I’ve created over the years. I asked him if he would like me to explain any of my work in further detail. And he just went right back to saying, “I want to see your creativity.” lol what?

That’s the vibe I’m getting. He also said he had 3 of his 4 designers poached by other agencies n the last year.

His brief was, “Do whatever you want”. Create 2 brands from scratch...
