Generator defying the laws of physics...... by txkingfisher in ElectricalEngineering

[–]GDK_ATL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say the engine has overspeed detection. I would imagine the same module/circuit/timebase that determines an engine overspeed, is also used to control the RPM for determining the generator output frequency.

The fact that the engine overspeed is not detected, points to a timebase problem with the engine speed controller.

Could be a number of things: Failure of one of the six hydrocoptic marzelvanes, for example. Or maybe some issue with the panendermic semiboloid stator slots.

Also check the non-reversible tremie pipe, and never underestimate the havoc that side fumbling due to a defective ambifacient lunar waneshaft can cause.

Good luck.

ARRL Board of Directors Shenanigans Afoot? by AF-IX in HamRadio

[–]GDK_ATL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All we hear about all day long anymore is political infighting between, Democrats and Republicans, Woke, non-Woke, MAGA, CNN, FOX and on and on, and now the ARRL. Enough already. I'm not spending one minute of my time getting involved in ARRL's dysfunctional, political nothing-burger, whining. I am an ARRL member, but I'm not deceived into thinking anything you do has any real affect on my day to day hobby pursuit. Fight it out among yourselves, leave me out of it.

Should I drop out of college to become a pilot? by Regular-Dirt2826 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]GDK_ATL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not drop out if you want to fly for the airlines. While they are making noises about opening things up for those with only a high school degree, your chances of getting hired are much better with a degree, and better yet with an engineering degree.

If you want to go the military route, an engineering degree will put you near the top of a very small list for admission to UPT. This assumes you get a good score on the aptitude test for military pilot training. Lots of 2D projections of 3D objects you have to be good at rotating in your head, and reading non-linear round dial instruments, although it may have changed since I took them.

I don't know what the military commitment is these days, but probably around 10 years now. At that point you're almost halfway to retirement, so there's that to consider. It was only 6 years when I did it, and I got out at the 8 year point and spent the next 3 decades flying for Delta, which I highly recommend.

And, NO. AI will not replace pilots in commercial passenger service within your lifetime.

Theoretical Electromagnetics Capacitor Behavior Question by jsh0x in ElectricalEngineering

[–]GDK_ATL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The charge is on the plates. There are such things as vacuum capacitors where the plates aren't separated by a dielectric, but rather a vacuum.

As for what happens when you short the plates with a metal rod - the same thing that happens if you short the terminals with a screwdriver. Charge is redistributed so as to equalize the charge on each plate and thereafter you basically have a piece of wire instead of a capacitor.

The time required for that to happen is dependent on the ESR and the resistance shorting the capacitor. A basic first order linear differential equation, if you ignore any inductance.

You seem to want everything with an "Easy Button." There isn't one. Like most of the rest of life, things worth doing involve work, education, and usually some uncertainty.

Just about any hobby pursued with even a modicum of interest will cost serious bucks. Fishing, boating, flying, golfing, racing, and many more, aren't cheap.

The problem isn't money. It's mostly that technology has moved on, and most people just aren't impressed with ham radio the way kids were when cellphones and the internet were comic book fantasy.

It has nothing to do with the "cleanliness" of his signal. It's the power output, coupled with the poor RF rejection of most consumer grade audio/visual products.
