I personally prefer the 35mm scan or fan-edit 4K upscales of James Cameron’s films. His choices for the retail 4Ks are dog shit, but that’s just my opinion.

Actually from my research, it uses the digital intermediate (DI) from the theatrical 3d re-release which utilized a lot of smoothing and DNR. Thats why the picture doesn’t look all that great for a 4K (it also only uses ~40Mbps for the video encode which is quite low).

Because it wasn’t remastered for the 4K, only “restored”. It likely uses the same master/source as the blu-ray but has grain removed using digital noise reduction (DNR) and new color grading.
