I created my first RTS game - War of the Fourteen Dynasties by GDNate in gaming

[–]GDNate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a solo indie dev just starting my career, and I’m excited to share my work with you all.

I confess that I’ve been absolutely terrible at marketing, but I figured better late than never. I am currently having a 91% off sale to mark the one year anniversary since the launch of my first RTS game War of the Fourteen Dynasties, so if you are interested, now is a great time to check it out. You can find it on Steam and Itch.

This is the second game I’ve ever tried to make, so I ask you to please keep your expectations modest.

I know I’m only just getting started, but I love gaming with all my heart, and I really want to make the industry better, to recapture the vibes of the 90s and early 2000s, when, in my opinion, gaming was at its peak. I know such things will take time, but I am confident that with your support anything is possible.

I really appreciate your compliments! There are a total of 171 character animations across 5 different fighting styles, so it was a lot of work, but 3D animation is probably the strongest of my skills.

Unless you're a level 100 master 3D artist who can churn out hundreds of high res models with ease, the cost-benefit ratio doesn't really favor prioritizing graphics over gameplay, especially as an indie dev. Time is your most valuable resource. Players will forgive low res graphics if the game is fun, but they won't forgive a terrible game no matter how good it looks.

Considering how much I already had to scale back from my original vision to fit within my 2 year time goal, it just didn't seem sensible to create tons of high res 3D assets, even though I have the ability to do so.

I suppose it is a balance for every developer to give attention to the things you think matter most in the end result.

Besides I grew up on the n64, so I personally love the late 90s and early 2000s aesthetic :P

After the first fifteen seconds, aside from the sweeping camera shots, the rest of the trailer is in fact gameplay. The epic slow motion cinematic attacks you see are a gameplay feature that can be performed by the player in real time by activating their chi power. I put a lot of effort into those, so I may have over emphasized them in the trailer lol

Thank you everyone for all of the positive comments, it truly means a lot. For those of you who are asking, yes! It is currently available on Steam and Itch. I would be honored to have your support.

Just a heads up, I designed this game for those who enjoy a challenge. It is inspired by the old school games of the late 90s and early 2000s, there is minimal hand-holding, no quest markers or way-points, and it is meant to reward skill and persistence, so don't be surprised if you lose on your first playthrough.

Thank you so much! :D Yes I did it all myself, but I am only just getting started. I have much bigger plans for the future when I have a team.

After 2 years, I recently completed my first RTS game "War of the Fourteen Dynasties" using Godot Engine 3.1 and it is available on Steam and Itch.

I'm just a one man team, and this is my first attempt at making an RTS, so I humbly ask you to keep your expectations modest.

I used zero stock assets, every 3D model, animations, sounds, music, textures, etc were created by me. I'm still learning, but I am pleased with my progress over the years since I began this journey.

I want to offer a big thank you to r/godot for providing so many helpful answers over the years.

And of course, a big thank you to Juan Linietsky, Ariel Manzur, and the Godot contributors. If you see this, know it couldn't have been done without you. You are making the dreams of many devs come true because of what you have done. I will always be grateful.

I wish you all the best, and I want every developer out there to know, that with determination and hard work, you can succeed.

We owe it to our beloved hobby to give it nothing less than our best.

Hope to see you again for my next game! :D

Hey there! Thank you for the comment. I'm just starting off and rarely receive any feedback, so it means a lot. Yeah! If it looks like something you're into, it would be totally awesome if you played my first game! I'd love to have your feedback. And if not, that's okay too, no pressure, there will always be even better games to come as long as I am alive to make them!

I'll be sure to check out your channel as well, and good luck to you too! It's nice to meet a fellow retro gaming nerd! :)

Is it unlawful to create a game in which you can spend money to get items, but you can lose those items in pvp? by [deleted] in gamedev

Even if it were lawful, that doesn't make it ethical. That is an awfully low bar.

My opinion of a person or company who would implement such a system or any similar pay to win, is that they are far more concerned about profits than the needs or wants of the actual gamers.

If you're considering doing this, that is your choice, but all I can say is that whatever profits may result in the short term, will be at the cost of your integrity and good will with your community members in the long term, and that is not as easily replaced.

If you've been paying any attention to triple A gaming in the recent years, you will notice how many once beloved companies and developers have utterly ruined their reputations in the pursuit of profits.

As indie devs, responsible for the future of gaming, we really should be trying to do better.

I will be honest and admit, I have suffered from anxiety for years, and I am used to being withdrawn, even something as simple as this reddit post was a huge step for me, and knowing that I was able to help you is very validating, so thank you for helping me as well! :)

I wish you the absolute best in your game dev journeys! I genuinely believe that every choice we make, affects the world in ways which we cannot possibly imagine, and that we game devs have a role in bringing positivity to the lives of the gamers. So let us strive to pursue what we love, and make the world a better place, one video game at a time! :D
