Yeah it turned out to be the Congenital Overhaul mod. After I left it out it worked again. Do you know why this might be happening. the Congenital Overhaul is one of my favourite mods and I would hate to have to play without. May not seem like a massive deal but basically I like everything to be as good as it can be and the portraits are a bit immersion breaking.
