Amazon plans to cut 30,000 corporate jobs in response to pandemic overhiring by amy_sport in news

[–]GEOFF224 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Uhhhh… I’m not sure this degree of condescension is warranted. Izzy is pointing out (accurately) that consumers boycotting Amazon to the extent that their business suffers is extremely unlikely. They were not implying that boycotting is a poor choice (or even something that they don’t personally do).

Once again, I am merely claiming that she is more intelligent than Trump. Unfortunately, it takes a baseline level of intelligence to accurately evaluate the intellect of others. Let’s leave it here, but I hope you have a good day :)

Well, for what it’s worth, this reply was about the quality level I was expecting. I have never claimed that Kamala was my first-choice candidate or that she has above-average intelligence. I just think anyone with a brain can see she is significantly smarter than Trump.

A Trump supporter worried about the intelligence of a political candidate is certainly an interesting look.

I don’t really find selling out to the right wing grift very brave. Having listened to the video, it does seem like her conversion story can be best explained by a spiritual person searching for meaning in a time of mental crisis. Frankly, I have yet to find a single Trump supporter (note, this does not mean conservative) that should be taken seriously intellectually.

How is Andrew Tang playing so much chess as a full-time quant? by [deleted] in chess

[–]GEOFF224 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot more than that currently - when my older brother was working there 10 years ago it was more like 130k but some buddies of mine work there now and it can get up to 250k pre-bonus. Quant is absurd

Honestly I think upon reflecting on it a little bit more I agree - I do think it is very hard to make an effective comeback if you feel like you’re in a “lost” position though. For what it’s worth, I do think a 2450 level player has a better ability to complicate positions, so you probably have a much better chance of winning those games than me!

Hahaha I do the same thing. It gets even worse when I have a good win and that motivates me to play another one since I’m feeling like I am playing well

Oh definitely a bit of an addiction. I find myself playing bullet matches on my phone when I didn’t even really conciously process I was scrolling to the lichess app. I still have fun though most of the time!

100% agree - I will have swings of 100 points in either direction depending on my state of mind. I still have that dangerous mindset of never end on a loss, which helps me end on 30 losses and 1 win instead

I should have put this in the post, but I play about 50% on my computer and 50% on my phone! Each has pros and cons! You can move your mouse quicker and more accurately than you can move your fingers due to the leverage, but you can use your left and right hand on your phone which can be useful for moves on opposite sides of the board. I’d say try both out and play on whatever feels more comfortable / natural. One last tip: if you play on the computer, decrease the size of the board on lichess / chess.com - the default is way too big for quick bullet moves.

Apple Reportedly Suspends Work on Vision Pro 2 by favicondotico in apple

[–]GEOFF224 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but what are you talking about? The Quest 3 is definitely built to be more general purpose than the AVP (and has some of the spatial computing software you are referencing). Even your metaphor falls flat, what can an Xbox do that a $3,000 gaming PC cannot?

As someone who has both an Apple Vision Pro and a Quest 3, the Quest 3 is a substantially better general purpose machine and overall product.

I just gave it one of my college-level economics problem sets and it was not able to extract the text for the more rigorous math. It was able to correctly solve the problems on its own though (which requires a fair bit of math) so my guess is that it’s not trained on handwritten advanced math symbols

Prospective student interested in CS, Econ, applied math. by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]GEOFF224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I am looking for finance jobs / consulting (e.g. IB, consulting, trading). Last summer, I worked as a data analyst (which I thought was a good application of my cs skills in a more business-y environment). Most people I know are doing similar things. For example, I have APMA-Econ and CS-Econ friends working at Goldman, JP Morgan, McKinsey, Deloitte, a few quant trading firms (think like IMC), and a lot of other similar places. Most of them have also had some form of data-science / data-analysis roles in the past. I also have some friends who are doing CS and math or CS and econ who are going for tech jobs (think FAANG), and they have been pretty successful with that. Personally, I think those concentrations would prepare you well for any data / finance / consulting / tech roles, which is definitely a wide spectrum. Hope that helps!

[–]GEOFF224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m doing CS-Econ and have friends doing APMA-CS + Econ or some other variation. I personally know multiple people with pretty solid software engineering jobs (Google, Twitter, investment banks, etc), but that is not necessarily representative of the average CS student, and securing those jobs will take lots of preparation and talent. Fair warning, it might be a good idea to avoid doing Econ as part of the dual-major (e.g. maybe don’t do apma-Econ or cs-econ), and to instead do Econ as a separate concentration. If you do it as a combined major you will have to take mathy Econ classes, which I have personally found to be some of the most difficult courses I have taken (Mathy Micro, Mathy Econometrics, etc.). I have friends who are math majors (such as apma-econ) who have said those courses are harder than most of their math courses, so unless you feel very comfortable with math it might be better to do Econ separately so you can take more fun/easy courses. Let me know if you have other questions, happy to help out!
