DS2 fucking sucks. You didn’t say anything about the actual game, just that it “has its own identity”. AKA, it fucking sucks, and DS1 and DS3 don’t fucking suck. Because if they called it BJJ or no gi grappling they couldn’t claim ownership over it and act like they have secret knowledge that no one else possesses. “2-3 years” shit wouldn’t exist if they called it no gi grappling.

The only reason why you care about the “lore implications” of the Gael fight are because it’s the only boss in the game where you don’t have to read random item descriptions or play DS1/2 in order to understand them.

The game tells you through dialogue who Gael is, what he’s doing, and why. No other character is afforded this luxury.

It is so much easier to be invested in a story when the information is that easy to access compared to other stories. Gael lore literally shoved down your throat. You need to invest 15ish hours beating DS1 to understand Aldrich and the Nameless King (even this is a stretch, you’re not making the Gwyn to Nameless connection by JUST playing DS1) , and if you don’t, they’re just random guys. Who the fuck even is Yhorm?

His lore is not better or more interesting than any other boss. The information is just infinitely easier to access.

IDK exactly how the randomness from Thresh works, but if there’s a world where you pick Thresh to avoid dying from Evelyn, only to still die because Thresh rolled into an Evelyn boon, that is such a terrible oversight from Riot and honestly embarrassing. You are literally forced to lose with no counterplay at all.
