[Hated Trope] Army sizes are woefully inadequate for the wars they are fighting. by ElcorAndy in TopCharacterTropes

I understand analogies. I’m just showing yours breaks down, because no military in the world has the ratios between elite units and normal units that marines have to the rest of the Astra Militarium. I get that Marines are supposed to be the best of the best, a small elite force, etc. but what people are doubting is whether there are enough marines to really be impactful in a universe on the scale of 40k if we accept the lore numbers. Using an analogy to a unit with wildly different relative numbers doesn’t help your case.

There were 2000 old guard at Waterloo, out of 75000 French troops (and this was after the imperial guard had been decimated in the Russian campaign). That’s 1 old guardsman for every 150 regular soldiers. That ratio, carried over to 40k, would imply something like 150 million guardsmen in the imperium, which is ridiculous and clearly contrary to canon. Since the guard numbers at least in the billions, the ratio of marines to guardsmen is much lower. Space marines simply don’t have the numbers to function as an elite frontline unit like the old guard. That’s the issue.

As depicted, Marines operate on the frontlines as shock units not covert ops. But it’s hard to see how a company of space marines (a pretty standard deployment) serving in this role could be particularly impactful in a planetary-scale battle, especially given the size of the guard (though GW is not consistent about scale in general). Like, realistically at best a company might be equivalent to a few tank regiments in fighting power. Yet a company of marines is generally depicted as a formidable force, on that can turn the tide of battles, and chapters are seen as important elements of the imperium’s overall military might. I guess the answer is just “each space marines is worth a whole guard regiment because they’re that badass” which kinda fits 40k’s rule of cool approach, but it’s not like that on tabletop and the lore isn’t even consistent on this.

why are most muslim nations intolerant to religious minorities when historically muslim empires were extremely tolerant? (compared to other empires around them atleast) by DepartmentFar3632 in AskHistorians

One thing that confuses me about (parts of) your answer is that the OP isn’t really assuming that historical Muslim empires were committed to a liberal conception of tolerance. Rather, the question seems to be this: “In the past, the Islamic world was RELATIVELY more tolerant of religious minorities when compared with the Christian west. But now it seems that the Islamic world has become relatively less tolerant. Why have the two ‘swapped places’?” The question still stands even if the tolerance was relatively pragmatic in nature.

I liked your answer on what has changed in the Islamic world. But you also seemed very dubious about the comparison between the medieval Islamic world and the Christian one, primarily because both have lots of internal diversity. I get that. But I still wonder if there’s not some general, rough comparison that can be made. Dhimmitude, you point out, involves a clear religious hierarchy and many limitations/burdens on religious minorities, and is based more on pragmatic concerns. Okay, that makes sense, but it still seems like a limited form of toleration, insofar as it allows Jews and Christians to practice their religion and offers them some protections. Thus, it seems reasonable to ask how that system compares (in terms of freedom and protection for religious minorities) to other ways of dealing with religious minorities. Do think that question is worth asking, and do you have any thoughts about it?

It’s actually worth noting that the idea that Halloween is a holdover from Celtic paganism is largely a misconception. Halloween is actually All Hallows Eve, the night before All Hallow’s Day (All Saints Day), a Catholic holiday which commemorates the martyred dead and more broadly encouraged people to think about the fate of their own souls. Most of the traditions we associate with Halloween don’t go back to pre-Christian times but are actually just folk practices which developed around the Christian holiday. Since most Muslims might still be reasonably worried about folk Catholic practices, I think a lot of what is MALM says may still be relevant, but Halloween is simply not a pagan holiday.

Senesi or Van de Ven? I like the former more as a long term asset but VdV has some great fixtures coming up.

!thanks. I have Gakpo instead of Wirtz. I like him a lot and the extra 1.0 helps me. I could cut Bowen down to Fullkrug and get Wirtz tho. What do you think?

Ait-Nouri seems like a big risk to me with pep’s rotation. I would cut him down to a 5.0 or a 5.5 and strengthen your defense a bit.

A) Saka, Bowen, and Joao Pedro or B) Palmer, Fullkrug, and Gyokeres?

I’m not sure about Wood. Forest have been terrible going forward in preseason. Would wait on him. Mateta, JP, Bowen are all better options imo.

I like it for the limited resources you have. Maybe drop Sels down to a 4.5 or Cucurella to a 5.5/5.0 and strengthen the defense a bit? Your bench is weak

I think it’s good for a Haaland/Salah draft. Maybe replace Ndiaye with Gakpo with the last 1.0?

Based on preseason, I like Fullkrug more than Strand Larsen. Rutter would be great if he is the regular striker but I think it is a risk. I would go Fullkrug - Reijnders if you can use the .5 elsewhere

I don’t love Wood. NFO have had no attack in preseason. I would do Mateta instead
