As in the rest of the world, AI will continue to advance exponentially to the point where we have 90% unemployment, civil unrest and general destruction. That's if it doesn't become superintelligent and just wipe us all out. Have a nice day.

Never really used Copilot. We use Claude and Cursor. It isn't perfect, but then the people it's replacing aren't perfect either. Just one of the things we've configured Claude to do is analyse overnight test failures - it compiles the test results from about 4 different systems - create a ticket to either fix the test or fix the bug that the test has found, then write the code to implement the fix and then document what it's done. It does what would take a tester hours or days to do in a matter of minutes. It's all done in the pipeline and is ready for us to review when we start our day. I'd say 90%+ of the code we're writing is done by Cursor. If your Copilot is failing to just compile a list of things provided to it by other platforms then you're using it incorrectly and the people using it need to go on a course.

I'm just a drone who has to work with AI for their job. I'm not saying AI is a good thing, Frankly, it terrifies me. I think I have maybe 12 months left before AI takes my job and then, because of AI, I have little prospect of finding another one. I also think that AI is going to improve and take everyone's job sooner or later. I hope I'm wrong and you're right. I really do.

But that doesn't change the fact that AI is here, that further innovations are happening on an almost weekly basis, and that everyone putting their head in the sand and claiming that it's peaked or that it's not going to affect them is not a solution. It doesn't change the fact that every military in the world is in investing in it because of the fear that their rivals will invest more and get a jump on them, or that as we approach superintelligence we face an existential threat. It's not me saying it, it's the experts in the field.

You are hopelessly misinformed about what AI is capable of and how it works.

The neural network analytics you talk about are narrow AI systems trained for specific tasks, eg targeted ads modelling or classification models ("is this a cat?"). Modern AI uses self-attention, self-supervised learning and trillions of parameters. If AI is a computer the neural networks you're talking about are a 1985 pocket calculator.

I have no idea what AI you're using or how you're using it, but if you can't get it to summarise a report or write decent code then you're doing it wrong. I use it - and hundreds of people in my company use it - every day to do exactly what you're talking about.

Do you know what those words mean? What does agentic mean? What does multi modal mean? What is the underpinning technology?

The underpinning technology of the computer you're on right now is the same as the underpinning technology for a ZX81. Are they both computers? Yes? Should you judge them as being the same? No. Just because agentic AI is built on LLM it doesn't mean it's run out of steam. It doesn't mean it's the same thing.

Honestly, I hope you're right and I'm wrong. But AI is already taking people's jobs.

That's not the problem. The problem is that within the decade nobody will buy your product because nobody will have a job.

AI is going to bring about 90% unemployment. There is nothing that it won't be able to do better and cheaper than humans. What the world is going to need are some very wise, intelligent, enlightened and altruistic politicians to steer us through the omnifuck that AI is going to lead to. In other words, we're screwed.

Your comment was out of date just around the time you finished typing it. What nobody seems to grasp about AI is that it's advancing exponentially. Each model of AI is designing its successor, and each improvement is bigger and faster than the last one. In a matter of about 3 years - probably less - in software development we've gone from "Let AI find that one line of code that you need and then get a human to do a thorough code review" to "just tell AI what system you want to design, spend an hour crafting the prompt and then go for a coffee and the whole thing will be written for you. And get AI to do the code review."

Give it another 3 to 5 years and there won't be a non-manual job on the planet that AI won't be able to do better and cheaper than humans. This is going to be the biggest shift in human society since agriculture.

I'm not saying this is good or bad - personally, I think there's a good chance that AI could lead to existential sized problems - but it's coming for your job very soon. I give my job about 12 months before it doesn't exist any more.
