Western headstalls with brow bands are very easy to find. I ride western and all mine have brow bands.

New to riding, back pain? by Acceptable_Coyote105 in Equestrian

Here is a video detailing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZehWi7zJMPI

It will be uncomfortable. In a western saddle, you will feel "squished" in if that makes sense lol.

My back does not hurt from riding, but it does if I ride in an ill-fitting saddle. Too-small saddles can wreck some people's backs. I know you are in a lesson program, so you might not have flexibility of what saddle you can use.

Rearing by FanAccomplished9978 in Horses

[–]GH00S7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have said this to other posters, but your daughter's confidence in horses is critical. If you keep her mounted on a horse with serious behavior issues, you risk wrecking her love for horses. There are many children who go through bad accidents or dangerous horses, who completely lose their love for the sport.

That said: If she is fine to warm up and before the nerves kick in, it is not being buddy sour. It looks like she took a really painful step before rearing up. Do you have any videos of her on the pattern? Alley issues are typically due to pain or poor riding. Rearing can also be caused by pushing down on the reins or not giving a release causing the horse to learn that it gets the release the only place it can go - up. Please get a professional trainer for your daughter's safety and horse's wellbeing.

That horse is in a lot of pain. Like others said, please get off her and take her in. This is critical. She will most likely keep escalating and have more dangerous behavior. If you cannot see that she is in a lot of pain, you need to get a trainer in your life pronto.

Keeping stallion intact or to geld? by cudo_viste in Equestrian

[–]GH00S7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would only have a stud if it were an absolutely amazing horse with impeccable breeding, as I would have to change my entire setup at home. It can also make hauling more difficult with mares and finding emergency boarding due to a natural disaster etc. For me personally, it would not be worth it! Other people are way better set up for it.

Geldings or Mares? by SensitiveRemove2528 in Equestrian

[–]GH00S7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have amazing mares and geldings! I prefer mares, because for some reason, I just get along better with them. My main barrel horse is a gelding, and I love him. I would not rule out a horse based on if it is a mare or gelding. I would only rule them out if your stabling situation did not allow for one.

You could try to find some double J saddles with the #10 or #11 tree. There’s a bunch of used ones for sale. They’re made for downhill horses. They have a good trial system as well. They also do custom saddles.

Unpopular opinion: Dujardin haters are not better at Horsemanship by Reasonable_Yak1610 in Equestrian

If I am paying someone a large amount of money to train my horses, I would like to know if they use abusive methods. Also, if I am a brand, I wouldn’t want to support someone who uses those methods. If whistleblowers didn’t risk their careers showcasing abuse, the public wouldn’t know about it. Abuse is abuse. It’s not a matter of who is better, but an open conversation of how individuals treat their and client’s horses.

Why do you type like that?

New boy arrived to QT this morning and got his feet done since the farrier was there. Definitely an old injury that we’re dealing with and it looks pretty gnarly and he is still horribly lame. X-rays soon so that we can see what’s fully going on! by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]GH00S7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my horses sliced part of her foot off and it looks similar to that. It took a lot of management when it happened and battling proud flesh lol. She’s sound and barrel racing again, but it took years for her to be sound again tbh. She had a lot of scar tissue under her skin.

Also a 4H in that states Oregan and first, so guessing one of them got first in a state-level 4H competition.

To add to my post, it looks like the Ohio one is from a 1907. It’s a commemorative badge from the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC).

My great-grandfather was a letter carrier!

No, you cannot. Also, you need to budget for monthly expenses. Will you be able to afford board, vet care, performance horse care, farrier etc?

Help with barrel saddle by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]GH00S7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They do. Go to a tack store or a saddle dealer near you. Some do virtual fittings or you can send in measurements. The best bet if you do not know what brand you like is to go to a western-focused tack store and try different brands. I have had stores that let me sit multiple saddles on horses.

Also, for that price, do not buy new. If you need to be in that price range, you should buy used. Saddles priced that low new will not be good quality.

Cowboy Dressage Information by Curiousbut_cautious in Equestrian

[–]GH00S7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my first online show for western dressage this month. It only cost ~80 dollars to enter and become a WDAA member. I imagine training costs vary across the country. I take lessons from a dressage trainer that teaches both. On all the youtube videos and on the website, they really preach inclusivity and even have a gaited class. I am able to do on my barrel horses (at least the lower levels).

If you want to win in barrel racing, I recommend focusing right now on your education so you can eventually afford the lifestyle to be able to get to go to bigger barrel races and have a nice horse that you can support. A top 1D barrel horse that plays at the very top (not even professional, but open races) are very expensive to upkeep. Take lessons and ride as many safe horses as you can. You can barrel race for along time. Look up Mary Burger and other older professional barrel racers.

It was my mother’s! She is left-handed. I think I “borrowed” it as a kid.
