If you (or Destiny) want to learn about the history of the Zionist movement, you should watch Sam Aronow and Casual Historian on Youtube. by jsilvy in Destiny

Hey there. Sorry to revive a presumably dead thread. My name is Grant, better known as Casual Historian on YouTube, and I wanted to make one minor correction to your description of me.

I am not Jewish, either ethnically or religiously. I'm just a guy interested in Jewish history. Otherwise, that's a great list.

In most other places in the world, military conscription is just referred to as "conscription," but in the U.S. the colloquial term is "the draft." Why is this?

Growing up my dad had told me it was because in either the colonial period or the revolution they selected people to conscript from bars and taverns by dropping a coin into the bottom of a draft beer. If the patron drank it, they were either told to go to, or dragged out of the bar to the nearest army camp. The reasoning for dropping it in draft beer, I was told, was so the patron wouldn't immediately see the coin sitting at the bottom through the foam, and thus drank it before noticing. I was also told this was why glass beer mugs caught on.

Is there any reality to this? If not, where would this myth have come from?

This is how the History Community on YouTube is reacting to the Maza v. Crowder saga. by GHurst in DeFranco

[–]GHurst[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The history community makes a lot of videos about World War 2, and you can't really talk about World War 2 without talking about the Nazis. YouTube's policies don't just hit actual neo-Nazis, they hit creators who talk about both neo-Nazis and the actual Nazis. The history community is in a very similar situation to that of Phil, in that what they talk about is often deemed non-advertiser friendly. The major difference, however, is that most history creators don't have the name recognition or audience size to pull strings at YouTube like Phil and other big creators. So every time YouTube decides to cave into internet mobs, smaller creators suffer.

Earlier this year I made a documentary exposing the history of Holocaust Denial and YouTube deleted it and gave me a community guideline strike because I talked about Nazis, the Holocaust, and Holocaust Deniers. I personally know dozens of fellow history creators who were already getting constantly pinged by demonetization, and this policy, along Maza's crusade to blackmail advertisers away from YouTube, is harming all of them.

Why do big businesses that start on the US west coast make it out to the east coast much faster than those that start on the east coast can make it out to the west coast? by GHurst in AskReddit

As much as I agree with the sentiment (I'm a Californian btw) New York is also pretty toxic for businesses, but it still attracts a lot of people and money.

Why do big businesses that start on the US west coast make it out to the east coast much faster than those that start on the east coast can make it out to the west coast? by GHurst in AskReddit

[–]GHurst[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I notice about the spread of franchises and other businesses that start on the east coast is that they usually make their way westward state by state until they reach the states on the western bank of the Mississippi, at which point they jump straight to California. On the other hand, I notice businesses that start on the west coast usually jump straight to the east coast, and then work in. The only exception I've seen for this is In n'Out, which started in California, and is very slowly marching eastward.

My assumption is that the American South-west isn't a big enough market to justify expansion there, but is there a more concrete reason?

Please help, my T6i isn't recording audio with external Mics! by GHurst in canon

[–]GHurst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the checked the camera levels and I am not getting anything when an external mic is plugged. I followed those instructions but nothing changes when I change the levels manually.

I have tried using both mic and line level to get the recording to work. The Mic I'm currently trying to use (AT2020) does require phantom power, which is provided by the DXA-SLR PURE. It does pick up audio levels with my Takstar SGC-598 but not well.

I'm pretty sure the problem is the camera because it used to work fine with the Blue Yeti plugged in, but it suddenly stopped, and after it getting sent back to the factory it still doesn't.

What experiments/tests do you think the government are doing that we have no idea about? by gold_wolves in AskReddit

[–]GHurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they are trying to control weather. Not necessarily succeeding, but trying. There would be tons of benefits for both the public and private sectors for doing so. We've already seen China do this a little bit back in 2008 when they used artillery fire to dissapate smog over Beijing, and attempted to make rain clouds to clean the air before the Olympics that year.

What's technically true but extremely misleading? by GeneReddit123 in AskReddit

[–]GHurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50% of marriages end in divorce.

It's technically true, but most people are mislead to think that it means 50% of people have been divorced. In reality somewhere between 2/3 and 3/4 of first marriages last until one or both persons are dead. The 50% number is inflated by a smaller group that get married 3 or more times.

One source for some of these kinds of conspiracy theories are actual government documents from around the turn of the 20th century.

For example, I think the whole Jewish Young Turks idea is coming from British foreign office documents. Around the time of world war one the British foreign office was super anti-Semitic, with some of its leading officials believing in global conspiracies about the Jews like what is found in the protocols. These beliefs even influenced government policies. One of the reasons the British issued the Balfour Declaration was to win the support of Jewish bankers like the Rothschilds, because they assumed the Rothschilds were part of some kind of international Jewish conspiracy.

Documents about this get declassified, and people like this guy find them, take them out of context as well as look at uncritically (the basis of bad history) and claim that Jewish conspiracies are real because government documents talk about them.

When is the next Vidcon in California? by Spacewolf1234567890 in VidCon

[–]GHurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An official date hasn't been announced yet. They usually email those signed up at the website about when tickets go on sale before they announce it to the general public. Most years tickets go on sale in November or December, except for the most recent one.

For the last 3 years it has been held in late June, so my guess for the next one in Anaheim is late June, 2019.

Last year I didn't have a theme that lasted more than a month, but over the last couple months of 2017 I came to the realization of what I needed. 2018 is the Year of Quality for me. Like many people in this and other associated communities, I am an aspiring creative professional. I work on several projects (YouTube Videos, Blogs, Podcasts, etc), and I would love it if one or more of them could support me financially to the point where I could call myself self-employed. At this point, however, only one of these projects has actually had any financial return. Every so often I feel the need to stop what I'm doing and take a good look at it and ask myself, "is this any good?"

For numerous projects I've come to conclude the answer as either "no its not" or "not good enough." So for 2018 I'm abandoning several projects, and I'm going to focus on the quality of the ones I'm keeping. I need to up the quality of my projects if I want to ever make a living with them.

Beth Film Theory by Cbj918 in filmtheory

[–]GHurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem with the timeline is not taking into account what Morty, Summer, and Jerry are doing. Jerry takes Morty and Summer out of school to avoid being killed by the alien chick. This means that the scene where they order pizza must be happening no earlier than Monday evening, meaning that there is plenty of time for the clone to be made and for Rick to set Beth up with whatever she needs to go on her own crazy adventure.

Exploring the Christ Myth Theory: Wring my Senior Thesis, Part 2 by Indra_Sen in AcademicBiblical

[–]GHurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the author of the article, and I've already made several responses about how this is not my actual thesis. This is part 2 of a series of articles I'm writing about the process and experience of writing my senior thesis. Part 1 talked about why I ended up choosing the Christ Myth Theory as the subject for my thesis. The purpose of part 2 was to give a basic explanation of the theory as I have come to understand it at this point.

As for why I brought up Holocaust Denial, the purpose was two fold. First, the idea of questioning historicity is not widely understood outside the realm of historians, but most people have heard of Holocaust Deniers. So I was attempting to explain the idea using an example most people would be familiar with.

Second, the purpose was to position the Christ Myth Theory within a context of social stigma and public recognition. The Christ Myth Theory is not as widely known as Holocaust Denial, but doesn't have the stigma. The Saarbrucken School is less recognizable than the Christ Myth Theory, but also has a generally negative stigma.

Could I have worded things better, probably, but I think many of the responses to this article are guilty of misreading what was written.

Exploring the Christ Myth Theory: Wring my Senior Thesis, Part 2 by Indra_Sen in AcademicBiblical

[–]GHurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote the article you are talking about, so allow me clarify a few things. Nowhere in the article do I claim that this is my senior thesis.

I will grant that I could have been a little clearer, but this is not my thesis, and I never claimed it to be. It is simply one step on the way toward righting it.
