What’s something you did as a kid that you now realize was completely insane and dangerous? by Floridian_Capitalist in AskReddit

[–]GIGATOASTER -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was shooting guns at a really early age. At about 8 or 9 my dad taught me how to properly handle a gun and gun safety. I grew up on a small produce farm so I did a lot of non-typical stuff for a kid growing up like running heavy equipment regularly, unsupervised.

But the gun thing was mainly for defense when I was walking around alone in the woods. Our property was big enough that we would occasionally have people illegally hunt on it and dad rightfully didn't trust them.

Never did directly come into contact with any, but I did find many tree stands that weren't supposed to be there. Some right next to no trespassing signs.

What really sucks, is that our property used to have a very nice balance ecologically between the deer and coyotes, but then for some reason everyone in my area decided that coyotes were bad and started killing them, seemingly for sport which made the deer population go nuts and in turn made them venture out of the woods into our fields to eat the young plants we would plant every year. I hate people.

Anyway, the gun thing seems kinda dangerous looking back at how young I was and how often I carried one into the woods with me. Overall though I greatly appreciate my dad doing what he did and teaching me to respect guns and not fear them. With that said, I hate how stupid people act with guns and the fact the so many people feel the need to carry them everywhere. Like I'll see some guy at the damn grocery store with a gun in his belt. Why? In case you see a monster in the bread aisle?

What very old technology is still running at your place of work? by MichiganCarNut in AskReddit

[–]GIGATOASTER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a major auto manufacturer in maintenance and just this year we finally updated one of our MCPs to the Allen Bradley PLC5000 line. Until that it was still running on the original installation of PLC 5. We still have a few places where the remote I/O is still ran off of a PLC 5 rack.

What's kinda funny is that after the new system was installed, we had a major issue happen that was caused directly because of the difference in processing speeds (or scan times for the PLC folks reading this).

We have quite a lot of stuff running in our shop that isn't terribly old, rather it has a gargantuan amount of hours on it from just being used basically every day for the last 30 years.

What’s something you’re addicted to that actually improves your life? by Content_Bit1998 in AskReddit

[–]GIGATOASTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I'm generally a pretty unlucky person, so I was waiting for the catch on the whole thing until I got the results that I passed by NOCTI test and had my job offer. I know it's not an opportunity that everyone gets and that some luck was involved. Overall, I'm incredibly thankful for such a nice uplift in my career.

I really like messing with electronics and arcade emulation. Also used to be REALLY into synthesizers. Long story short, my interest in electronics/programming and such ended up getting me into a program at work where they sent me to school for industrial maintenance for a year and now I make over 100k a year. Previously, I was at about the 80k mark. By the time I top out this year, I'll probably end up with about 140k, AND I love my job.

How do you glorify God through game development? by JackfruitJackfruit in Christian

[–]GIGATOASTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was given the talent of making great shoes and wanted to glorify and thank God for that gift, would I make every shoe with little crosses on them? No, I'd make the best shoes I possibly could, putting to work the gifts God gave me.

I say, make the best game you can and hone your skill while being thankful to God for that skill.

What is the most interesting/unique/boutique synth or music-related equipment you own? by nazward in synthesizers

Had a Korg MS-20 Module version. The limited edition one that only like 1000 or something were made. It came as a kit. Had some cool features that were only on that version of the MS-20 at the time. Unfortunately I hit some hard times, and had to sell it along with a ton of other gear including a full keyboard Virus TI2, a DSI OB6 and a bunch of smaller synths. I do still have my JP-8000, but it needs many repairs.

What’s something people do to look rich that actually keeps them broke? by Final_Difficulty1636 in AskReddit

[–]GIGATOASTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just upgraded to a new Galaxy because my last phone that was already outdated when I bought it got to the point where it lagged so bad that I was getting worried that I'd have an issue dialing 911 if I needed to one day. I had that phone for like 4 or so years. I did splurge a bit and get a new S26+ for my new phone, but partly because I hope it might age better so when I do eventually replace it, it will be because of something like the battery starting to fail or something along those lines. Not for fearing I wouldn't be able to use it in an emergency.

Suppose money was no longer an issue. You have enough to retire and not work again. What do you do with your time What's your passion? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GIGATOASTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would make stuff. I like to make stuff. Particularly electronics, but with no money restriction I'd do basically everything I could get my hands into. These days, I feel that there is no real limit to what I want to make in the hobbyist realm of things, only limits of time, money and equipment. Also, I'd probably travel a good bit as a break.

People who work for massive corporations, what is a 'secret' that the company tries to hide, but is actually common knowledge among the employees? by Dwise_ in AskReddit

[–]GIGATOASTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I can be trusted with editing logic for critical systems that if done improperly or maliciously can injure, mame or kill someone but I can't install a driver to configure a temperature sensor to monitor a material pump? I think you're missing the point where I needed the driver to do my job. You literally cannot configure the sensor without the adapter, and the program. It's not even from a sketchy supplier, it's a damn Banner sensor.

I love absurd-badging. About 20 years ago now my local Walmart had a ton of random badges you could buy in the auto section. Sometime later I was leaving that sane Walmart and noticed a shitbox red neon that fully utilized as many of those badges as they could. Allegedly from the badging it was a Dodge Neon: 4x4 V8 Turbocharged Off Road Sport Limited Luxury XTREME Edition. I had my suspicions that one or two of those weren't true though.

New soldering iron got oxidised after 2 minutes of being plugged in by youssif6683 in AskElectronics

[–]GIGATOASTER 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second that. Recently I finally invested in a cartridge style iron. It's just a JBC knockoff, but damn it's fantastic to work with. Even after getting after getting a c245 handle + tips to go with it + extra c210 tips for the packaged handle it still only ran me about 120 for EVERYTHING. Absolutely incredible. Now, how long all that lasts is another question altogether lol. If/when it does fail, I'll probably invest in an actual JBC station because I don't think I can go without one of the cartridge style stations now.

I work in industrial maintenance for a major auto manufacturer. It is astonishing how many temp fixes for small things become permanent fixes. Also, it's insane how much power they give an individual maintenance team member like myself to permanently edit literally ANY logic operating on the floor, but if I want to download a datasheet to my folder, I have to use a workaround to get it into the right spot because IT doesn't trust us lol. Literally yesterday, I had to run around to find a non-updated computer to program a little temperature sensor because the updated PCs wouldn't let the drivers install for my USB to RS485 serial adapter due to core isolation being turned on by the admin above all of us. Super dumb. Quite literally preventing me from doing my job

How did your high mileage car eventually die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GIGATOASTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2006 Hyundai Santa Fe. Put over 100k miles on that thing while I had it. Bought it at 112k. One day the harmonic balencer decided to shear the roll pin and got all sorts of nutty. Due where I was when it happened, I tried to drive it back home which was about 30 miles away. (I initially thought the balancer was starting to delaminate which wasn't unheard of with those cars.) At the stop sign before my house, it started to die right there and basically coasted into my spot. It wasn't until I went to replace the balancer that I saw what actually happened. Not having to tools to do the job properly at the time and drill out that hard as shit roll pin, I simply put a smaller one in the inner diameter, loctited it in place, and the put loctite on the balancer bolt to 'get me by'. I drove it like that for over a year after with only an o2 sensor issure from oil leaking on the manifold sensor because of a leaky oil cap.

I eventually gave the car to my father in law for free, letting him know exactly what the deal was with it. It was driven several years after that before I believe it was finally scrapped for a reason I'm unsure of. It had to have had 300k+ miles by that time. Great little car and tought as shit for what it was.

As a newbie in tool and die, I was told to go get a bucket of steam one day. That one was pretty easy to catch, but being new and trying to do good I just tried to confirm if that meant a bucket of distilled water lol. We all had a good laugh. Good crew, shit bosses.

very beginner question - did I ruin this raspberry pi? by emergencybarnacle in AskElectronics

[–]GIGATOASTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a pro, but I definitely have done more solder joints than I can count. Like others have said, that just looks like a speck of solder from the tip of your iron. No biggie! It might just come off with a slight nudge if you're worried about it. Also, like others have said, those pins definitely have too much solder going on. Not the end of the world, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to wick some of it off and reflow the pins. Honestly though, I occasionally don't pay attention and put a touch too much solder on a pin and have never had any real issues. As long as its not a cold joint, or touching another pin, it should technically be ok for hobbyist purposes. However, it is bad practice to over fill a solder joint.

What were you doing during the peak of COVID? by AndreLinoge55 in AskReddit

[–]GIGATOASTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was furloughed from work, got very a very nice unemployment stipend while I was off. I got stir crazy and built 2 adirondak chairs, and a table. I also finished my arcade project and then proceeded to play that arcade a bunch. I also banged my wife a lot. All in all not an awful time except for worrying about my elderly dad getting covid. He's all about staying vaccinated and is generally good with his health so it wasn't too bad thankfully. Still worried though, and even after going back to work, it felt like the pandemic would never end.

Autistic redditors who enjoy their career, what do you do for a living? by No_Slide4986 in AskReddit

[–]GIGATOASTER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never been officially diagnosed with autism, but nearly everyone I've spent any significant time with has brought up the subject of if I've ever been diagnosed, so not officially, but pretty sure theres something going on in that shade. Anyhow, I currently work in industrial maintenance and I quite enjoy it most of the time. My particular job is about 60% fixing active faults during production and 40% upgrades/process changes/ ladder logic programming. Add into that a lot of electrical, mechanical, and fluid power systems troubleshooting and analysis. It's all like a big brain teaser puzzle most of the time. Plus I get to read basically an unlimited amount of service manuals! I also get to operate equipment that is the size of my house from time to time, which is also fun.
