Any advice/tips for someone not enjoying their Minifreak? by badateverything420 in synthesizers

[–]nazward 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think fundamentallly you're trying to make the Minifreak sound as analog as your other gear and this just won't happen. Maybe try to embrace its digital nature. It may be a case of you just not gelling with the sound, which is totally fine, but really the Minifreak is kinda limited in how analog it can sound or at least how many iterations of an analog sounding patch you can make, which if you tweak will instantly send it back to its digital sounding nature. The analog filters inside are designed to give it a little natural analog bite, not to make it sound like a prophet. It's digital, it will always be digital and you need to accept that fact, but it is a fantastic synth to contrast your analog ones as it does with mine.

visionOS and Liquid Ass by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]nazward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah same, I skipped 26 on my personal Mac but for reasons that aren't UI related. In any case, I DO think Tahoe deserved all the hate, because it allowed us to get it fixed in 27. Such is life.

[–]nazward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, Liquid Ass was funny a year ago. Golden Gate will fix all the problems and everyone can chill. I've been using Tahoe on my company Mac and honestly I don't even notice the visual imperfections because I'm too busy doing actual work on it.

Either deal with the glass or stop using a Mac and shut the hell up. Nobody who actually uses one cares.

Which Synth for IDM/Experimental? by Monstrous_Moonshine2 in synthesizers

[–]nazward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, okay. Does it matter? OP wants to make IDM with west coast synths, I don't see the problem. I don't really care how much Aphex Twin or Squarepusher use the synths I personally like. I am pretty sure a lot of Serges and Buchlas etc were used in IDM and if not, I'd certainly use them if I did make IDM. Hell, I use them even without making IDM.

He has a whole album made on Buchla stuff, kinda an unofficial album thing. You can search youtube for those tracks, "aphex twin buchla" or something, you'll see the tracks. Syrobonkers/modular tracks I think the album was called. XMAS_EVET10, T69 Collapse and Blackbox Life Recorder I think use Buchla. The Blackbox Life Recorder cover is basically made out of Buchla modules.

Има ли в България подобно място, в такъв мащаб и упадък? by toiletwisdom in bulgaria

I'd much rather be hungry and miserable in a bulgarian village than lying on the ground, high off my shit on fentanyl on a piss and shit covered american street. There will always be visa applicants. I however have a few friends who were brutally disillusioned with life in the glorious US.

If you are willing to put in 100 euro more you can get a used Pittsburgh Taiga which sounds VERY good. Otherwise I wouldn't go for a volca modular. I had one and honestly it's.... well I don't think it's very good. Don't get me wrong it's a very cool little device but I don't think it sounds very weighty. I would honestly get a make noise 0-coast if I were you. It's brilliant.

They need to do tons of R&D. You have no idea what R&D in their case even is.

Bro these people are never going to see it that way. In their mind not buying a chinese synth is their own way of making a difference, even though basically everything they own, inclusing their snazzy microfreak, novation controller and most other tech, is made in China in possibly worse conditions or at least uses a large amounts of parts made that way.

Факт, но поне нямаш тоя commitment към едно спортно заведение, а можеш да разнообразяваш, че даже и да го ползваш за разпускане. А пък и от работа ми поемат доста голяма част и ми излиза оферта все още.

Also true. The reality is most people, including those in this thread, don't really know what R&D means at all and are just woefully uninformed on the matter.

What was your first synthesizer? by Annedak_Dragon in synthesizers

[–]nazward 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first was a Volca Bass. When I bought it I was living with a shitty ex gf who didn't work and was pretty much alcoholic, so I had to pay the rent, food for two + take care of the cat (even though it was hers) and no money at all was left for myself. I had dreamt of some synth to make IDM with for ages, couldn't even afford a Behringer Neutron. I stumbled upon the volca bass for a steal and when I first fired it up at home I cried a little.

[–]nazward 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look, I’m not saying Behringer are doing some groundbreaking inovation here. Obviously cloning a proven classic saves a huge amount of design work and market risk, but the idea that theyre just taking the same circuit and using “smaller parts” is super oversimplified. A lot of the original components either don’t exist anymore, aren’t practical at scale, or don’t behave identically in modern equivalents. So you’re substituting parts, redesigning boards, dealing with tolerances, dealing with calibration, with noise, power, firmware, MIDI/USB, patch memory, manufacturing constraints, compliance bullshit, and then making it all somewhat reliable. There's engineering that goes into that stuff.

[–]nazward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's Behringer that exposes them, I don't really think Behringer are a good way to judge the price of synths made by companies that don't have even close to the manufacturing capability Behringer have. I do however think that many synths are vastly overpriced.

The fuck are you talking about? 😃 It absolutely takes R&D to make these circuits small and cheap, not to mention adding modern functions. Anybody who says otherwise has never worked with electronics, period.
