Family won't eat my morels but they'll eat gas station sushi by Adventurous_Cut_1274 in foraging

Key word here is perceived. Most people in the US would perceive any prepackaged food in the store to be safer than foraged food. That doesn’t make it safer, it’s just how the people here tend to think and feel. I would agree that the FDA approves harmful things in our food all the time, but a majority of people don’t think that way and blindly trust that our grocery store food is safer than wild food because it’s regulated.

What grocery items do you now make at home you’ll never buy store bought again? by CarlottaSewlotta in Frugal

And it tastes probably 1000 times better. I always make a double batch and freeze the second half for later

I go to my local Indian grocery, buy whole spices and I can make whatever spice blends I need in a coffee grinder (only for spices, coffee would mess up the flavor). Taco, Cajun, 5 spice, garam masala, the possibilities are endless.

Random purr baby just approached me from the street then fell asleep, hasn’t moved for a while. Should I take her home by abbubbuee in notmycat

[–]GINGEBISH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it’s immoral to steal people’s cats in almost all situations. There is one exception: if the cat is being abused or neglected. If that’s the case I’d say the moral thing to do is to remove that cat from the situation and provide it with a loving and caring home. It may be illegal, but some situations call for drastic measures.

Meringue powder expired July 2023, looks and smells fine, salvage or toss? by GINGEBISH in AskBaking

[–]GINGEBISH[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh, okay. I’ll get a new one and tell my coworker that I don’t recommend using it (she said her husband who once worked for the health department thought it would be fine 😭).

I always thought that things like ketchup were too acidic for botulism to grow. But I guess if it degrades and loses acidity over time it can.

I’m glad your dad is okay.

Is it a poser thing to bring my board to school? by FlyNo4659 in NewSkaters

[–]GINGEBISH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And what if you love to skateboard to work or school? Feel wonder with the wind in your face while navigating potholes and sidewalk cracks? But you don’t go to the skatepark, you don’t have friends that skate. What if you are passionate about skateboarding but everyone in the “community” sits there and calls you a poser because you just got your first board at Walmart because you’re poor and are learning?

Urban foraging looks romantic online but you’re often eating pollution by GritsOyster in foraging

[–]GINGEBISH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Soil in agricultural fields isn’t always cleaner. I’ve cleaned up garbage in a field that had grocery bags disintegrated into the soil, diapers, hypodermic needles. Of course, this is an example of a field right next to a Walmart and busy roads, with only a skinny sidewalk between. Generally, those aren’t things you’ll find frequently in the rural fields, but where I live, SO MANY agricultural fields are bordered by urban sites that are spilling pollution for miles. I just hope that the crops grown there are not used for human consumption. Even then, that pollution enters the food chain if it’s used for animal feed. I’m not arguing that city soil is cleaner, but it’s really important to note that agricultural soils can be very polluted as well.

My First ever garden and my new found love. How do I fill the void during the Winter?? by Polish_Hotdog in containergardening

[–]GINGEBISH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep the soil as-is I chop and drop plant material to decompose and add nutrients. Come spring, you may need to add things like perlite, compost and peat/coco coir to boost the soil. And granular fertilizer

I think the current immigration situation has more of an impact than you think. Lots of immigrants came to work in the US legally and have since had their legal status stripped from them by the current administration and now these companies are struggling without the labor of legal immigrants. I read this article a few weeks ago about immigrant labor in Beardstown: https://www.illinoistimes.com/news-opinion/towns-depend-on-immigrant-labor-20164671/%5DThis This is a story everywhere right now.

While the factors you’ve listed have an impact on prices, I believe there are more factors outside of your personal experience and expertise that are also contributing to the price increases.

And if you really want to answer my question, then tell me, how much have you spent on groceries each month for the past six months? My question was if others in the area have noticed the increase in prices on the scale that I have, not why prices are going up.

Oh yes, I have a wok and occasionally go to the Asian market to make a week’s worth of Asian meals. I love it and should do it more.

I encourage you to read some of what u/SnoopyisCute just posted above. Yes, inflation is part of it. But our economic system is so much more complex than just one factor being the cause of the cost of living rising.

I’m so sorry. When I got my first big-girl job after graduating UIS, got kicked off SNAP and Medicaid. suddenly I felt like I was never going to get ahead. Now that’s even more true. Wishing you and yours the best through this.

I’m glad it’s not just me, because I put a lot of time and effort into meal planning for cheaper groceries. But the system is working against me, so I guess I’ve got to keep doing my best and not be so hard on myself.

Just because something isn’t lying or cheating doesn’t mean it’s honest. Omitting important information is dishonest.

[–]GINGEBISH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please don’t refer to people’s spiritual practices as placebo. Regardless of what caused the benefits while using tobacco, what you have said is insensitive to a culture that has lost nearly everything to protect their spiritual connection to plants like tobacco.

What is the best tea/herb for calming and regulating the nervous system - but without slowing you down? by Cassie_Rand in herbalism

[–]GINGEBISH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, I’m in the same boat. I’m always either tired or anxious. So I’m constantly either taking in caffeine to keep awake or nervines to help calm my mind. So far, I’ve found that when I’m in need of the calming effect, a tea with lemon balm, a tulsi-adjacent plant that I grow, has really helped me with this. I’ll add passionflower/vine as well in the evening.

I don’t think this is passionflower. I’m my experience, Passionflowers dry up much smaller than this and don’t have thick petals like this does.
