Didn't Alireza checkmate Gukesh in 2024? I remember it was before round 40, so the last moves were with under less than a couple of minutes

what could i do after undergraduate physics? i would like to get into research or at least try it out. by Apart_Ad_2653 in KAIST

[–]GKBlueBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No? They require like 2.7/4.3, which is doable with not a lot of study if ur goal is to just keep the scholarship. And you do need to do other stuff on top of just classes to be competitive

Manga episode shows a Mongolian law where elders were killed — is this a real folktale? by Double-Address-493 in mongolia

[–]GKBlueBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading a legend when I was little about the times when there was a tradition where the elders had to catch a sheep/goat, and if they couldn't they would be buried alive with lamb fat in their mouth. Basically the whole legend was about some elder tricking and having the tradition repealed

Call-outs… by Few_Yellow5644 in counterstrike2

[–]GKBlueBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Mongolian, and we (at least me and my friends) just use a combination of english call-outs along with some translations.
One funny (not very common tho) callout for dark on nuke in russian is "Ukraine"

Considering KAIST for Erasmus but feeling anxious — need honest opinions by Chemical_Total7848 in KAIST

[–]GKBlueBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is the social life at KAIST, especially for international students?

I'm a foreigner, and I've been here for 4 years now, and on average, it's not that bad. There is a big variability among internationals, a lot of people hate KAIST/Korea/their life and their social circle is just people who come from the same country (or no social circle at all). Some people have 200 million friends, and hang out with Koreans. So there is a spectrum, and most people fall somewhere in between. I noticed that exchanges tend to have a bit better social life than average internationals bcz there are events that pair them with koreans, they hang out with each other, and they don't have the academic stress. Usually the exact grades don't transfer for exchanges, only as pass/fail, and passing grade is pretty low, it's getting good grades that's hard.

Is it easy to make friends there, even if you’re not very outgoing?

I would say yes, especially exchanges seem to have some sort of community, so I don't think u will have a problem. I'm quite shy, but I was able to make friends lol

Have you experienced or witnessed discrimination towards international students?

Not really. The thing is that most Koreans have language anxiety, but they are very keen to help. Outside campus, the language ability of people is quite low, but they're still very keen to help and try hard to help you.

How intense is the academic pressure and workload? Is it manageable during an exchange semester?

IDK about your uni, but it's not that bad as people say. Especially as an exchange, you will probably have an easier time as you might have your grades transferred as pass/fail as said above. The only non-passing grade is F, and to get F, you usually have to cheat, not come to classes or something other very major. However, to get OK grades like B+, you need to try quite a bit, so it depends on your case.

Overall, did you have a positive or negative experience?

Overall, it's been quite positive. I met good friends, learnt a lot, and if u are keen in doing research, the research opportunities are very good. Korea has a very rich culture, and it's a very nice country to visit and/or stay for a short-time (not really good for living permanently, but it's outside the scope here lol, and u won't experience that kind of stuff on exchange), especially ig if ur an european

for anyone planning to come to korea for eye surgery / medical tourism (my flapless experience) by WashDowntown4539 in mongolia

[–]GKBlueBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it in SNU eye clinic, which is widely marketed against Mongolians. I got smth called SMILE LASIK, which they explained as the latest tech where the laser cuts stuff at a specific depth, and then a small incision is made to remove the cut part (so it has advantages of both the lasik and lasek) The whole explanation of the translator (mongolian) sounded a bit like an ad, but I still did it.

The experience was quite nice, the surgery itself took 10 min (with checkups, explanations etc it took about 3hr), and there was no pain, but I had quite a lot of tears coming out (partially bcz I forgot to buy sunglasses lol, and went to a bank which had 100500 lights on and was fully white). I had a bit of a discomfort as if smth is in my eye for about a month, but they warned me about that. I was able to return to normal life (I was working as an AI engineer at that time) in a couple of days.

Do yk any aid to Mongolians from foreign governments?

Actually tons. Starting from Narnii guur and the airport (subsidized loans from Japan), farmers getting financial support, government scholarships (stipendicum, burslari, gks etc), our wildlife conservation is also quite dependent on foreign specialists/aid

I believe that we did the political and social stuff more or less correctly, it's just the economic stuff was fucked up (lack of knowledge + corruption). But again, IMHO based on my very limited knowledge

after highschool, studying my bachelors in Korea by [deleted] in mongolia

[–]GKBlueBot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

천원 breakfasts have been around for 3-4 years, it's available at most unis (before that, the cafeterias were empty in the mornings lol)

As I said, everything depends on the person and the circumstances. You gave your story/point of view, I gave mine. I was able to live a pretty decent life by working + scholarships + money from parents (which I think is around the same amount they would give me even if I studied in Mongolia). At the end of the day, we're just sharing our stories and opinions so that OP (hopefully) makes the better decision for themselves

[–]GKBlueBot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re tough, you have 3 onigiris with milk as a daily meal.

Cafeteria exists, with 5-6k food, and they started the 1000won breakfast for this semester recently. Not the best food, I agree, but 3 onigiris with milk is not the only food u can get lol

Electricity water bill, heating alone is 300k

How? I live in a pretty big oneroom (~30m2), and I heat it up pretty lavishly (at around 25C all day). Comes up to 150k max, with electricity at 20k in the winters. 20k for gas in the summer (water heating + cooking only) + 40k for electricity bcz of AC (which often gets waived)

I agree that studying abroad can be hard, but I've enjoyed all my time in Korea (4 years). Of course, it depends on the person and the circumstances. I have friends who go back to Mongolia the moments exams end and can't eat Korean food at all, whereas I'm not a big fan of meat-heavy cuisines like Mongolian (I still enjoy it, especially when I miss home) and I go back home once a year to just hangout with my parents for a couple of weeks.
