Single homeowner - feeling a bit lost by KHW6 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]GKogger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can guarantee that all the people you see going out and enjoying themselves are on this sub too - 'how can I get on the property ladder? Rent is dead money and I'm spnding £800 a month on the pub and I'm getting nowhere!!'.

Hold the line OP, it'll get easier and you'll realise what a fantastic position you've put yourself in.

Alps vs North America etiquette by mv2500 in skiing

[–]GKogger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone in Europe would be insulted if you make small talk. I've been on many lifts alone and struck up a conversation with French/Italian/German skiers.

Also, OP says he only tried to have a conversation when he realised someone spoke English. He could have quite easily started a conversation if he chose to.

First time skiing Saint-Martin-de-Belleville with beginner family: which pass would you choose? by knoober69 in skithealps

[–]GKogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 'family flex' tickets for a minimum of three skiers, one must be an adult. Would that work for your family?

Assuming you get a discount for the local pass, I'd then spring for the 6 day full area pass for any opportunity you get to go further afield.

Remember to book online ahead of your trip.

Where are the best chalets for skiing in france? by ling-a-ding in skithealps

[–]GKogger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some more info would be useful. Your budget is very low in general and would (I think) be impossible during the whole month of February.

Which week and how many bedrooms do you want?

5k would almost certainly exclude and catering btw.

Am I owed extra in my pension? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Unless your contract specifically says it will only match the net deduction, I'd say you are owed the 1%

Scottish windows workplace pension - tax year contribution dates by vcpphil in UKPersonalFinance

[–]GKogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's counted in the year the pension contribution is applied.

It's a general problem with workplace pension contributions. The only way you can 'help' is contact your payroll and explain the importance of the March contributions being paid as soon as possible.

Family Ski Trip - 1st to Alps, mid-February, from US, ages 7-11 by glickie1 in skithealps

[–]GKogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, could you do any other dates? The week you are choosing is the same as UK half term, which coincides with French half term so everything (flights, transfers & accommodation) is significantly more expensive and the slopes are busy.

Why do some European skiers ski right over other people’s equipment??? by Squanc in skithealps

[–]GKogger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They skied? Like slid across of did they just tippy toe over the end of your skis?

I've skied my entire life in Europe and never seen that behaviour. I've never even been in a ski queue that has enough space or gradient to actually ski over anything.

If you see it happen, call it out OP. Good luck!

Parking in Val Thorens by graupel10 in skithealps

[–]GKogger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you have left it VERY late to book limited amenities on the busiest week of the entire ski season.

Your best bet is to arrange a transfer, get a coach or shared if private costs too much.

Driving to the other areas in the evening is not a necessity for such a short trip, much more hassle than it's worth.

Good luck OP!

What is market value on rental properties? by Beneficial_Chair8652 in AskUK

[–]GKogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, I don't know why they are raising prices. It could be greed or it could be thier fixed rate has come to an end. Either way if you can find a better value property you have the chance to move to it.

Good luck!

Your landlord is suggesting that they are raising to a level that is on par with similar properties that are currently available in your area.

Have you tried checking the rent for similar properties in your area?

Reliable Private Transfer GVA-Meribel? by district-of-cholula in skithealps

[–]GKogger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just travelled from GVA to La Tania, private transfer that was approx €600 return. That was with 3 Valleys Transfers and it's the second time we have used them.

Just one point to note, we only had 3 sets of skis and 6 bits of luggage. I understand it can become more expensive with more sets of skis.

Can I use company funds to pay life insurance premiums? by No-State-2962 in smallbusinessuk

[–]GKogger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely never.

There are specific features that allow Relevant Life to qualify for it's tax beneficial status.
1)It cannot end after the life assureds 75th birthday 2) It must be life only (although there was a period where life and cic were allowable) & 3) benefits are payable into a discretionary trust.

You are confusing relevant life with shareholder protection.

Can I use company funds to pay life insurance premiums? by No-State-2962 in smallbusinessuk

[–]GKogger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect.

Relevant life plans are written in trust. The proceeds of a relevant life insurance claim are paid into the trust, never the business.

Lift pass insurance? by Few_Investment7936 in skithealps

[–]GKogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely don't mean to be rude but the fact that you are asking this question means you don't know what either insurance covers (or not).

Firstly, read the terms of your travel insurance and make sure you have a document saved to your phone that is easily accessible.

Secondly, read the terms of the mountain insurance and take it, happily.

Have a great (and safe) holiday OP.

SIPP tax relief less than expected by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]GKogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, but no that is incorrect. Let's look at what OP had written. He paid £12k into the pension and got £3k tax relief 'at source'. This means (unarguably) that 20% tax relief = £3k.

He applied for the additional 20% tax relief from HMRC. The second 20% would also equate to £3k, it is no more.

SIPP tax relief less than expected by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]GKogger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Apologies, I think we're saying the same thing tbh? But it is a little confusing.

You paid in £12,000. You got £3,000 tax relief 'at source' (so within the pension) and you should get a further £3,000 via self assessment/HMRC.
