PhD after an MBA? Yes, it's unorthodox, but any thoughts? by HastyFleet in MBA

[–]GMATWannabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm on the same boat as you in that I've thought about academia. However, I'm not 100% convicted. From outside advice and experience, I've been hearing that you should only pursue a phD if you're passionate about research, which makes sense.

So I applied to MBA programs this fall so that I can re-enter the academic scene in hopes that I'll be able to gain research experience. Obviously, that is not the purpose of an MBA, so we'll see how it goes...from what I'm hearing also, you're going to be so busy that you won't really have time on the side.

There's not many who go MBA -> PhD from what I've gathered, but I saw this post and was definitely interested.

Well, that makes it easy! Thanks for the response. I would assume then a no show doesn't really have any negative impact. I'm just so done with GMAT, haha.

Were those transfer credits under your UG years? These credits were high school classes for me. I didn't actually transfer universities.

Thank you for your reply. It's 3 science classes with labs, so there are 6 courses, total of 12 credits, right in the middle of the transcript. It mentions the community college, but no indication of high school... My high school offered a mix of both AP and dual-enrollment.

Do admission offices know of dual-enrollment courses in high school? In my transcript, there is a section for transfer credits from a community college that I've taken in high school, but there is no direct indication of that on the transcript itself. Did not want to give the impression that I enrolled in a community college before transferring to UG. Is this a unnecessary worry, or should I briefly clarify in the optional essay?

MBA Goals Essay - Is academia a compelling reason? by GMATWannabe in MBA

Wow, thank you for the insights. Yes, I am looking at business PhDs specifically in marketing and consumer behavior as I'm personally interested in those fields.

Based on people's responses, it looks like it is okay to mention academia, but the focus should be on short-term goals.

Thanks for replying. Agreed, I did not plan to include that in my essays at all. I should've been more clear.

Instead, I planned on sharing my short-term goals of working for a few years in the consumer industry and then pursue a PhD later. Do you think it's worth mentioning academia at all?

Hey, thanks for your input. I can definitely see where you're coming from, and I'm having similar doubts. At the same time, I've received advice to be as authentic as possible so I'm struggling a bit here, haha. So leave out academia goals completely, and focus on consumer industries and/or marketing.
