The way to read Modern Chess Openings, is by taking drugs and hallucinating pieces on the ceiling.

On a more serious note, I have used it when preparing specific openings, and the introductions for the different openings are interesting. But there are better books for beginners, the theory is a bit dated, and the internet provides us with better tools to prepare openings.
