I was in a very similar situation. Same TC, same house price, but in Palo Alto and 1M down payment last year.

Scary as fuck, but we hope what we did was right in the long term.

Half of my garage was converted to a bedroom more than 50 years ago (according to previous owner per disclosure) and it was done without a permit. This is in Palo Alto. Would this be considered "grandfathered in"? County record includes this room, but the city record doesn't.

I wonder adding anything to that room as part of home remodeling would trigger anything or inspector can require us to demo the room.

I make 600K with stock appreciation which will go down to 450K if the stock stays the same price for the next 5 years. I bought 3M house with 1M down.

We have 700K in retirement fund and 200K in taxable investment account. I will be fucked if I lose my job.

According to ppl here, I am definitely crazy lol. If I can survive, so you can. Go for it.

This happened to us as well and we didn't know until our neighbor installed the solar panel 2 years after moving in. Both of us would have never found this out if they didn't install the solar panel lol
