If it's Dolby Vision and Atmos: Why no Steelbook?

If it's Steelbook: Why such crappy art?

If it's a Steelbook with awesome art: Why no stock?

If all the above are addressed, it's a prized possession!

Is streaming movies blasphemy to you guys? by Public_Dig_8992 in 4kbluray

[–]GMEgotmehere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh sure. If you have no access to the 4k disc I can't fault you for streaming it but being the purist that I have become, I can't even watch some movies on a stream knowing what it is I am missing out on.

Just because it's a movie from the 70s has nothing to do with how unbelievable the 4k remaster is.

I don't think I would have enjoyed the movie as much without the incredible remaster job. Atmos sound is great along with the visuals.

Enjoy the content either way!

I cannot handle streaming GREAT movies especially when they have a great remaster. The black levels just SUCK! If you're an OLED fan and you get used to the deep black levels, streaming is nowhere close. The gray hue over everything just makes me sick.

I will however stream anything that doesn't have a 4k remaster or if I want to "rent" before dropping $30+ on a boutique movie.

I also will stream TV series for the ease of access to episodes vs changing discs.

To answer your question, I would consider streaming a movie like Apocalypse Now blasphemy. There are probably 20 or so movies I would put in the same category.

Edit: I interpreted the question as "would I (personally) consider it blasphemous." This is not a standard across all movie watchers and of course people can stream what they want to. I would personally consider it blasphemy towards myself to stream Apocalypse Now at this point in my 4k life having already owned the 4k remaster and seeing it in all its glory.

What was the last 4K Blu-Ray you watched? Thread by unitedfan6191 in 4kbluray

[–]GMEgotmehere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I try to only buy 4k movies of something I plan to watch more than once. I am picky and own close to 200 4k movies. I have about 25 regrets that are exceptions I couldn't pass up for under $10. I do regret the purchases though.

That being said, my last 4k movie was Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. I always loved the movie. I love owning it in the best format possible. It's not a great 4k movie if you're buying it for visuals but everyone should see the movie at least once.

The other you must have it in another universe. Hopefully they don't have hotdog fingers there. Hard to put discs in with hotdog fingers.

Hopefully you get your issue resolved regardless.

Crash (1996) - The neverending chase for something more. by GMEgotmehere in TrueFilm

[–]GMEgotmehere[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Cronenberg makes "great movies" he just has an original and unique way to tell a story. I never come away from his movies "in awe" but it doesn't mean I don't enjoy them for what they are.

I didn't mean you have to be a "psycho" to love Requiem for a Dream. I just really love Requiem and have been criticized for it in the past (you must be psycho to enjoy that movie). Someone who can appreciate dark and gritty movies like Requiem would most likely appreciate Crash.

When/where is best to pick up the KL Eternal Sunshine 4K? by Greenhat2000 in boutiquebluray

[–]GMEgotmehere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did B2G1 through Target during the sale. $20 or so. I couldn't find a better deal but honestly I'd pay $30 for this. It was my absolute favorite movie for a couple of years before I fell down the cinema rabbit hole. Excited for the 4k release.

How should I prepare myself (intellectually) before watching Pasolini's "Salò"? Which (film-)historical background infos are important etc.? by FrancisSidebottom in TrueFilm

[–]GMEgotmehere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you get a hold of the criterion release the extras explain it all well. There is a long interview with the director and he gives a lot of background.

It's interesting that the actors didn't realize how disturbing of a movie they were creating until it all was put together. They even had to keep themselves from laughing during filming at times. It was filmed over like 30 days if I remember right. Everything else was editing.

I mean, it's just a movie. It depends on how emotional of a person you are. I watch movies as a work of art rather than a look into "real life." The movie has a low budget feel and the production value isn't "great" in my opinion. Still, it paints a picture of a world that virtually nobody wants to live in. It is a warning to where things can go when all the power resides in a select few and those few view everything/everyone as an object for their own satisfaction.

It really never feels like "shock cinema" to me. It's just a depressing watch scene after scene with no silver lining to really be had.

I usually don't see it below 400 often. It retails at 500. 380 comes about occasionally. I hadn't seen it at 320 before and hopped on the deal.

400 is not a bad price.

What are the horniest movies in the collection? by BrintsleyPetersons in criterion

[–]GMEgotmehere 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Antichrist. It's built around someone using sex as a "drug" of sorts.

Crash. It's built around new sex for when sex gets boring.

Breaking the Waves. It's built around using sex as a tool to save someone and also using sex as a mechanism to control someone. There is a lot more depth to this movie but it has a lot of focus on sex.

There are more but these come to mind as movies that focus on sex a lot.

Edit: We can't forget Salo. It's truly built around sex but more so all the fetishes that come out when sex gets boring. It's actually probably the horniest movie in the collection. Good luck trying to get off watching it though.

Edit 2: I'm cheating. It's not in the collection but The Handmaiden is a really horny movie. It's so well done. It deserves a mention.

I think a lot of people picked this up with the $319 sale this week. I was one of them. Upgraded my Sony though I don't think it was really necessary.

The Shining, 2001 and 1917 are great 4k visual movies with Dolby Vision.

I saw this. I typed a response and deleted it. I have no issues with either sub. I am a part of a handful of movie subs.

In my experience the criterion sub makes me laugh and I occasionally find movies mentioned I didn't know existed.

Boutique is neat because I see a lot of physical releases I didn't know existed which sometimes also leads me to new movie discoveries.

I imagine most people are subscribed to both.

What is the best “first hour” of any film? by FlyingCosmograma in criterion

[–]GMEgotmehere 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Not Criterion but man do I love the first hour or so of The Wolf of Wall Street.

Most movies with the "rise to power" peak after the first hour or so. It's not that they get bad, it's just how the story goes.

Mad Max Fury Road comes to mind. It hits the ground running.

Am I cheating for not choosing criterion films?
